Ultracycling legend Lon Haldeman joins us to talk about his recent PAC Tour in Ghana as well as the upcoming Elite PAC Tour.
The fastest transcontinental bike tour ever! PAC Tour's first Elite Tour was in 1995 and has been going strong ever since!
Daily miles range from 140 to 196 miles per day. Riders completing 100% of the tour will qualify for the Race Across AMerica. This extremem cross country bike tour intended for the most serious riders who are looking for a very challenging ride across America. All riders must routinely ride 200 miles in 10-12 hours in training. An Elite Team Division is being offered for two riders to share participating by individually riding 80-120 miles each day.
This Elite Tour begins in San Diego, California with moderate daily distances the first three days while crossing the desert. We hope all riders will be able to gradually work themselves into shape before they begin the longer days for the remainder of the tour. The route will use a combination of good cycling roads we have ridden for many years.
This is not an easy cross-country route following the boring flat lands of the Southern states. We will intentionally climb many steep mountain grades in Arizona and New Mexico. In the eastern states we will ride many hilly days including the notorious Talimena Parkway which includes many 15% grades.
This cross country bicycle tour is only for the best riders. Do not come on this tour if you are looking for an easy ride across the country. Even the fastest riders will be tested to their limits on most days.
Lucky's Market lived up to its name a week ago when I luckily bumped in to 303Cycling contributing editor Cheri Felix. Cheri was getting ready for a cyclocross race and conditions could not have been better. Snowing heavily with 18 degree temps. Cheri had never raced in snow so I was looking forward to hearing all about her experience. Cheri usually rides mountain bikes and lately has become cross curious. She has three kids, one dog, one bearded dragon and a husband. When she’s not taking care of her family she’s riding, planning a ride or writing about riding. Cheri’s passion is spreading the good word about riding on dirt and how it can change your life. She also likes beer which is not a requirement to ride bikes. You can follow Cheri on Twitter @mtnbikechi
Joining us for a discussion about the newly formed Panache Endurance Elite Team are Mick Walsh, Colin Stokes, Wayne Dowd, Joan Deitchman, Adam Morley, Sarah Cooper, Vicki Ford, Jill Robinson, Jodie Lawston and Carol Pope. The team is excited about our newly forming ultra team competition in which the burden of one rider traveling across the country to earn points is removed by team members earning points at selected events. Our goal is to increase participation and be not only strong racers but true ambassadors of our sport.
Janel Holcomb’s professional career began as a Chemical Engineer but she soon transitioned into teaching high school chemistry, math, and physics to help teenagers get excited about learning. During her time as a teacher in San Diego, Janel discovered road cycling by riding and raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society with her husband. Cycling friends and a local coach encouraged Janel to take the next step and start bike racing; it turned out to be the right path as Janel turned professional in 2008, just one year after her first bike race. Janel has raced for three pro teams and the US National team in the US, Canada, Europe, New Zealand and Qatar. Her breakout year was in 2011, when she won the overall NRC title and three NRC stage races: Cascade Cycling Classic, Tour de Toona, and the Joe Martin Stage Race. Janel was honored to be selected as a member of the US Olympic Long Team for the 2012 London Olympics and will continue to race through 2016 with the goal of qualifying for the Rio Olympics, helping the US earn a gold medal at the World Championships, and winning more races along the way.
Ultra runner Eddie Metro of the Department of Agriculture is heavily involved with Boulder sports through volunteer work (at Flatiron Running fun runs) as well as through competition for example racing for the Flatirons Running Team at the Colorado Cross Country Championships. Racing through 18 degree temperatures and snow Eddie placed 2nd in his age group. Metro is a popular personality around Boulder and especially Flatirons Running stroe. We look forward to hearing about Eddie's roots in running and what keeps him motivated to push his limits.
Carol Taylor of the Boulder History Museum joins Duane Duggan to discuss the Chief Niwot exhibit. To commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the tragic massacre at Sand Creek, Colorado, the Boulder History Museum is re-introducing the award-winning exhibition, Chief Niwot~Legend & Legacy, with new content and artifacts previously not on display.
Chief Niwot struggled to find peace during the most fateful years in Southern Arapaho history. His life and legacy are revealed in this exhibit along with the Arapahos’ place in Boulder’s history.
The Boulder History Museum is excited to present the powerful story Chief Niwot, one of the most notable Indians of the plains, a man about whom legends were made. Niwot’s story is one of honor and deceit, hope and despair. When hoards of white men began migrating to the central plains in the mid-nineteenth century, they moved into the land that was home to the Arapaho and Cheyenne Indians. In 1858, the Arapaho Chief Niwot (translated in English as Left Hand) astonished the early gold-seekers in Colorado by greeting them in their own language. He and his tribe hoped to make peace with the newcomers to allow the two cultures to share the same land and coexist peacefully. Niwot devoted his life to this struggle but his efforts ultimately failed. He was mortally wounded at the Sand Creek Massacre in 1864. This exhibit is the first to reveal the story of Chief Niwot and the complexity his struggle to find peace during the most fateful years in the history of the Southern Arapaho Indians.
