Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) - 1163

    in Self Help

Tonight's special guest is Justin Hoekman from Chicago, a returning NAASCA family member. Justin endured a childhood filled with sexual, physical, mental, verbal and emotional traumas. As an infant, Justin was adopted into a Christian Reform family of foster parents, and a younger sister was adopted when he was a toddler. Sexual abuse and molesting began when he was 3, and his 13 year-old cousin "played doctor" with him starting at the age 6. When he was 10 he was sexually abused by a family friend. This abuse went on for 2 1/2 years. Justin's dad physically abused him for a decade and he has vague memories of his dad sexually abusing him as well. His mother often witnessed his father's physically abuse but did nothing to stop it. Justin left the house at 17, but he'd begun using drugs to escape the reality of his home. "I have always felt less than, unimportant, and have hated myself for a long time," said Justin. "Currently, it is difficult for me to trust others. I am diagnosed with chronic depression and anxiety." But he now works the 12 step Narcotics Anonymous program, and has a wonderful therapist. "While I am no longer in contact with my parents, my sister and I remain very close. As a child when my dad was beating me, my sister was my saving grace, she would scream and my dad would stop." After working on himself for a number of years Justin's made great progress and hopes to return to school to become and LCSW, a therapist with his own practice. As he says, "I would like to help in anyway I can whether that be a child advocate, helpline, sharing my story, or anything else." He goes on, "All of the horrible things I endured I believe happened so that I may help other overcome and be a survivor of childhood abuse."

Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) - 1150

    in Self Help

Tonight's special guest is Laurie Purcell from Bay Shore, New York. Her abuse was physical, sexual, and emotional. The neglect she experienced is a large part of the reason she's lived most of her life in full leg braces .. from being thrown out a second story window when she was 4 yrs old. She says, "From the abuse I died 3 times. Heaven is wonderful, but God wasn't ready for me. The second trip took me 4 years to recover from. I have anoxia, brain damage due to lack of oxygen. That effects my memory. I got to the point of realizing I couldn't recover relearn everything." But Laurie's resilient, if nothing else. "I was with the Guardians Of the Children for 4 years, until they shut our chapter down. Crushed, but that didn't stop me from spreading awareness of child abuse through my story." She goes on, "I am passionate about this cause," adding, "In my photos on Facebook you will find picture after picture of the extent I go to for the kids." In addition there are 4 or 5 videos on her timeline. "If you watch one, or all of them, you will find out who I am," she points out. "I'm a warrior who will fight this battle to the end for the kids of today. My message: You can survive...and those of us who did owe it to our kids to save them from what we went through."

    in Self Help

Tonight's special guest is Edward (Ed) Mashek from North Carolina, a child abuse survivor who grew up in foster care. Ed's an active volunteer member of the NAASCA family and is involved in numerous efforts to combat childhood trauma. Ed's a tireless advocate, author, and activist for foster youth, abused children, and all victims of abuse. He has a B.S. in Psychology, an MBA, and is a member of Psi-Chi, the National Honor Society of Psychology. Ed serves as a board member for NAASCA, the National Association of Adult Survivors of Child Abuse, as a co-host and regular panelist on the "Stop Child Abuse Now" (SCAN) radio program, and is a member of RAINN's (the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network) Speakers Bureau. His motivation comes from his own time growing up in an abusive foster home and his desire to prevent others from having to experience the things he did. Ed has spoken at conferences, before governmental committees, and at the US Capital. In July he will be speaking at the SCRIPT conference in Los Angeles, which will be dealing with issues unique and specific to male survivors of trauma and abuse. In August he will be relocating to SE Asia where he will serve as NAASCA's official regional representative and continue his fight against child abuse. Read his BLOG

Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) - 1117

    in Self Help

Tonight's special guest is Lakeisha Smith from Rochester, New York and a child abuse survivor. "Everything we do and go through is for a reason. We may not know what those reasons are but we are not the ultimate decision makers...GOD is," she writes. "I am trying my hand at it all. I look forward to pursing my dreams of becoming a successful entrepreneur. As long as God is with me, nothing can stop me! Its just a matter of time, hard work, and dedication before it becomes a reality." Molested as a child by her father (her mother didn't want to hear about it), Lakeisha withdrew inside herself, keeping the secret. Eventually she sought help and was given an understanding that she still has today .. that the sexual abuse was not her fault, and not her mother's fault either. As she says, "Through her therapy she was able to pull herself out of a dark place in my life." Lakeisha has produced a couple autobiographical "My Childhood Story" YouTube videos (part 1 & part 2). She descries them by writing, "My childhood story is an autobiographical documentary about my unfortunate experience with child molestation. This documentary is a brief insight on how child molestation affected my life and how I have moved past that point in my life with the purpose to help others." Lakeisha's been preparing herself to be an even more effective anti-child abuse advocate. "I would love to take part [on our talk show] and tell my story to help others." And she continues, "It is going to be very helpful with my advocacy efforts along with information that I currently have. My interest in CSA comes as a result of my unfortunate experience as a child."
