Advances in Speech Therapy for Aphasia

    in Health

Join Dr. Richard Steele, Lingraphica's Chief Scientist, as we discuss new research in the field of speech therapy. Today's topic - how people who suffer from aphasia after having a stroke can improve language performance and communication skills years after the stroke.
Dr. Steele conducted similar research years ago in the development of Lingraphica's speech-generating devices.
Questions we'll ask Dr. Steele -
Why is research such an important part of trying to assist people with aphasia? How is research — by Lingraphica and others — used as the foundation for each speech-generating device developed by Lingraphica? What particular aspects of research are implemented in Lingraphica's TalkPathSM Suite of Speech Therapy Apps for the iPad?

#252 Ideas for Toddlers Who Don't Sit Still for Speech Therapy

    in Parents

Join pediatric speech-language pathologist Laura Mize, M.S., CCC-SLP as she provides ideas for a mom who complained that her child can't sit still to work with her on developing language and has difficulty maintaining attention during therapy sessions.

From Laura... Here's the truth... MANY late talking toddlers can't (not WON'T) sit still. We'll BRIEFLY talk about why that is and then move on to ideas that WORK for our friends who need to move, move, move. Here's a list of things I do with my busiest little friends:

    Do what they like!
Decrease demands overall so that a child doesn't feel "forced." Participation is your ONLY goal. This can dramatically help!!
Don't sit... MOVE! Target language during gross motor movement or outside playground activities such as sliding, jumping on a trampoline, swinging, etc...
Try social games where moving is a part of the game - Ring Around the Rosies, Row Row Your Boat, Ride a Little Horsie - verbal routines during those games to target receptive and expressive language.
Introduce play that involves moving - improvise a basketball game even without a hoop, bowling, launcher toys, and relay games
Work on Structured Teaching Tasks - TEACCH method
Over time begin to alternate activities move - sit - move - sit
Modify a child's space so that movement is less of an option. Beware....belting them into a high chair is usually NOT a good option!
Don't try strategies for older children like "if/then." Many times our little friend DON'T understand that promise.
    Reinforce sitting.

The TRUTH about Reverse Speech from ME, LIVING PROOF OF REVERSE SPEECH

    in Science

OK, as long as you've got the ability to speak and play back your voice then YOU TOO can be a testament to the TRUTH about naturally occuring reverse speech. Don't let your faulty preconceived notions based in ignorance of the facts get in the way of allowing your mind to process this new and exciting information that you do not yet understand! Reverse speech is deeply rooted in the fabric of our forwards speech, in other words, the words we choose to say forwards deeply reflect our innermost thoughts, feelings, intentions, and emotions, and these are more often than not made manifest when you play those spoken words backwards, even if you did not OUTWARDLY ADMIT such things forwards, such as when you tell a lie. Without spoiling too much in the description here I can prove to you tonight the extraordinary truth about reverse speech from 2 of my most powerful reversals in my entire life up to this point, which definitely prove that naturally occuring reverse speech not only DOES EXIST, but it can even spell out future events that pertain to your own life. Plus I've got loads of others, example after example. If you have WRITTEN and SUNG your own HEARTFELT MUSIC, REVERSE IT!!!

Urban Therapy with Sun #127 The Challenges Of Raising Special Needs Children

    in Lifestyle

Icylee Basketbill and Kelly Pointer will be our guests on this show to discuss Special Needs and the challenges that the parents of Special needs children face on a daily basis.

Every child born into this world is a blessing and there is nothing that feels as special as bringing a child into this world. We also have to take into account that some children are born into this world with needs that require a different level of attention than the average child.

Historically Special needs children would be labelled as retarded, sick, touched, slow or even freaks. Fortunately we have come very far in our understanding of how the brain functions and we have taken away the negative stigmas and are able to provide the children with the help that they need. The goal is to develop them into fully functional adults that are able to meet life's challenges the same as any other person.

Whether your child is mentally challenged, autistic, has cerebral palsy etc, it's gonna be very tough for a parent mentally, emotionally and especially financially. Our 2 guests will be on hand to help with any questions you may have concerning this such as:

What causes a child to be have special needs?

Is there anything that can be done to prevent it?

What happens if the parent of a special needs child dies before the child or is not physically able to provide care?

Is it normal to feel embarrassment or shame about your child and what can be done about it if you do?

What are the financial requirements needed to take care of a special needs child?

How does the attention needed for a special needs child affect the other children that you have?

There will be so much to talk about on this show so make sure you don't miss it.
