Hybrid International Jazz Day - with Slim Man!
Threw you a curve ball there, didn't I?! Hah! We are celebrating International Jazz Day in a BIG way - playing songs from many of the artists who will be participating in this annual event. A project that not only brings together varying Jazz styles and influences - but one that promotes peace. Herbie Hancock's website states that Mehmet Munir Ertegun, the former Ambassador from Turkey, was the inspiration for the IJD to be held in Istanbul. A beautiful story, depicting the love of this late, great man - toward those in the Jazz community. A love that was felt by Mr. Ertegun's sons, who followed a career in music. Let's honor this wondrous day (April 30th) with all that we have :)
As well as the healing music of those who are coming together for this special day, we'll spend time with one of our favorite guests: Slim Man! You know the story by now: Papa Slim takes his five year-old son to see "The Five Pennies" with Danny Kaye and Louis Armstrong. Tiny Tim takes one listen to Louis and exclaims, "That's what EYE want to do!"
Trumpet at 10, self-taught on piano and guitar, bass in middle school - then two bands of note: Momma Max and Boot Camp - and somewhere along the line, Timmy became Slimmy. And the rest is Manicotti history!
Yes, there's PLENTY more to say - but why the heck do you think we're conducting this interview? Slim has to have SOMETHING to say! LOL! Indeed, his guest appearance at The Temecula Wine & Music Festival this coming weekend is a big deal - with Patrice Rushen, Gregg Karukas, and Brenda Russell. Then, he's returning from his new home in Nashville BACK home to Baltimore - for a fundraiser on behalf of the Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital. That will be at La Scala on May 14th. So much to discuss! Join us at two p.m. - music at ONE!
