Olympic Figure Skating with Amanda Evora

    in Sports

Figure skating is notoriously rife with drama and intrigue. Since its introduction to the Winter Olympics in 1924, figure skating has been one of the most popular, yet controversial competitions.

For the first time in the 106 years since the sport was introduced, figure skating will be a team event at the Sochi Games.  In addition to their individual events, athletes from 10 countries will compete against each other as a squad, combining their efforts for a shot at a group medal in addition to individual crowns.

As Olympic events go, this one has the intrigue and secrecy of a Cold War spy novel. Countries have been guarding their playbooks like their national secrets for good reason.

Most recently Amanda won Battle of the Blades with retired NHLer and skating partner Scott Thornton.Amanda joins us to chat about her path to the Olympics and what it means to compete and sacrifice to get to the the top level of amateur sport in the world of figure skating.

We’re LIVE on Wednesday, January 29th, @ 7PM EST at BEYONDtheCheers on blogtalkradio. Dial-in TOLL FREE 1-877-357-2448 in Canada and United States to ask a question, or email in advance

    Speed Skating: The Inside Edge

    in Sports

Speed Skaters can reach speeds of 48km per hr or 30 miles per hour. The roots of ice skating date back over 1,000 years to the frozen canals and waterways of Scandinavia and the Netherlands when men laced animal bones to their footwear and glided across frozen lakes and rivers.
Compared with hockey- and figure-skating blades, speed-skate blades are both longer and thinner. To assist with constant counter clockwise motion, they're also slightly off-center, and curved to the left. All it takes is one push to feel the blades steering you in that direction. But movement on speed skates is a snap compared to enduring their viselike crunch on the feet.
Olympic speed skating consists of eight races: the men’s and women’s 500 meter race; the men’s and women’s 1,000 meter race; the men’s and women’s 1,500 meter speed skating race; the women’s 3,000 meter speed skating relay; and the men's 5,000 meter speed skating relay.
Justin Warsylewicz, Olympic Silver Medalist, gives you the inside edge of speed skating. Justin shares the story on his remarkable comeback from a heart condition to standing on the podium in 2006.
Be a part of a growing BEYONDtheCheers team of listeners as we bring the world of speed skating to you as we chat LIVE to Olympic Medalist Justin Warsylewicz on Wednesday December 19 @ 7PM EST on blogtalkradio.

A quick look at possible NBA and NHL playoff match ups

    in Sports

In this episode of The Red Light Sports Ramble, presented by The Red Light Sports Network, Evan Witalison and Troy Otradovec will take a look at the possible playoff matchups, in the NBA and NHL.  With just a few games to go, the NBA Eastern Conference has six teams battling for three spots.  Of these six teams, who will be on the outside looking in?  The Western Conference is a two team battle, for the eigth seed.  New Orleans and Oklahoma City, both 42-36, are the only teams alive, in this playoff race.  Who will pull this off?

The NHL is down to one or two games, depending on your team.  The biggest news, is the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Dan Bylsma was relieved of his duties, last year, after failing to make a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.  This year, new coach Mike Johnston has had to deal with a massive wave of injuries.  However, his Penguins are skating on thin ice.  They have a one point lead, in the wild card, and if they stumble, could miss the playoffs.  Do you think that Mike Johnston is in jeopardy, of losing his job?  Listen in or call the show.

Breast Cancer Survivor Talks About Faith, Resiliency and Parental Involvement

    in Education

Dr. Mike Robinson, host of Parent Talk Live talks with Tamara Wallace Norman, a cancer survivor about how her faith and resiliency supported her desire to be involved in the academic life of her son.

    BIO:

Tamara Wallace Norman, native of Dayton, Ohio, is a wife, mother, and avid roller skater.  Tamara is also a breast cancer survivor.  She was diagnosed in December 2011.  At that time her son, Zion, was 6 years old and in first grade.  He was also in his 2nd year of attending an immersion language academy where we was studying Mandarin.  During Tamara’s cancer journey, she took a break from her 20-year career as a flight attendant in order to focus on treatment and supporting her son’s education.  Her approach to dealing with life has always been to incorporate with her faith two attributes: resiliency and steadfastness. She has seen the effects of this positive approach to life play out in her ability to remain cancer-free for three years and in her role as a mother, helping her son to excel in his studies.  Whether flying, gliding across the hardwood or writing about her passion for roller skating (you can find her at www.lacesandwheels.com), Tamara’s zest for life is most apparent.  She currently resides in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her husband, Jaron, and her son, Zion.
