Bernard Hopkins vs Sergey Kovalev Preview

    in Sports

On Saturday night, HBO will be live from Atlantic City, as two of the top three light heavyweight boxers in the world will be on display. Golden Boy Promotions presents champion vs champion as “The Alien”, Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins will be squaring off against Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev in a bout for the WBO and IBF World Light Heavyweight Titles, as well as the WBA Super World Light Heavyweight Title. This unification fight will give great backing to the winner of this fight being touted as the best light heavyweight in the world, although Adonis Stevenson would have something to say about that.

The future hall of famer, Bernard Hopkins just continues to keep going. He now stands with a record of 55-6-2 with 32 KOs, but the thing that sets him apart from everyone else is his resume of work through his long and extremely successful career. He successfully defended his IBF middleweight title for 19 defenses which lasted over an 11 year span. He may not have won every fight, but when you mention the people he has fought, it’s unmatched by anyone in the sport.

Bernard Hopkins vs Sergey Kovalev Preview

    in Sports

No matter what kind of fight is on the schedule, you can count on promotional companies and other PR entities to come up with gimmicks and weird stuff to get blood pumping. This weekend, "The Alien" (a 50-year-old guy who somehow is still relevant in boxing) meets "The Krusher" (a guy who displaces brain cells with a smile). Because Bernard Hopkins and Sergey Kovalev, two quality light heavyweights on HBO, aren't enough. And this week on TQBR Radio, James Foley of Bad Left Hook and Queensberry Rules' Patrick Connor probe the ins, outs and what-have-yous of Hopkins-Kovalev. But there's other stuff to talk about, too. Like last weekend's Andrzej Fonfara vs Doudou Ngumbu Showtime card (that also had the absurd Javier Fortuna vs Abner Cotto and respectable Tomoki Kameda vs Alejandro Hernandez), and a few other odd offerings like Felix Sturm vs Robert Stieglitz, Tomasz Adamek vs Artur Szpilka, and the HBO undercard of Sadam Ali vs Luis Carlos Abregu. Thanks for tuning in!

Sergey Kovalev vs Bernard Hopkins Recap with Kelsey McCarson

    in Sports

To quote the guy who played Socrates in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, "Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives." How that relates to boxing is that fighters get old and whatever. And this past weekend, Sergey Kovalev packed Bernard Hopkins' wrinkly bags for him and showed him the door. Whether or not Hopkins walks through said door is another story entirely. This week on TQBR Radio, James Foley of Bad Left Hook and Patrick Connor of The Queensberry Rules welcome to the show Kelsey McCarson of The Sweet Science and Bleacher Report. Apart from the usual boxing discussion (which will included Kovalev-Hopkins, Sadam Ali's victory over Luis Carlos Abregu, the HBO undercard, a Wladimir Klitschko vs Kubrat Pulev preview and more), we'll also be talking about Kelsey's effort to raise funds and awareness for a young boy diagnosed with bone cancer. Thanks for tuning in!

Episode 28: Adonis Stevenson Returns to the Ring

    in Sports

This weekend marks the return of the Superman, Adonis Stevenson as he squares off against Dmitry Sukhotsky. With all of the chaos surrounding Stevenson's alleged dodging of Sergey Kovalev, Adonis has much to prove in his second and final fight of 2014.

Former top prospect and current top ten super middleweight Andre Dirrell looks to continue his rise through the 168 pound division as he takes on Derek Edwards. Perhaps the most intriguing fight of the night features the heavy-hitting super prospect Artur Beterbiev as he looks to extend his knockout streak while working towards an inevitable clash with top dogs Adonis Stevenson and fellow countryman Krusher Kovalev who sit atop the mountain of light heavyweight supremacy.

Jay-Z has officially entered the fight game with the announcement of his first production dubbed,"Throne Boxing," on January 9th at Madison Square Garden. The event will be headlined by Washington, D.C. area native and welterweight prospect Dusty Harrison.

All of this and much more on a special preview edition of the Tale of the Tape boxing podcast.
