"Another Fork in the Road" Regaining Consciousness with Author, Deb Angus

    in Education

Most rear-end collisions are caused by distracted drivers or drivers following too closely to the car ahead. In either case, it is the unsuspecting driver in the car ahead who may suffer whiplash, which may result in a variety of injuries such as problems with light sensitivity, depth-perception problems, tinnitus, memory problems, concentration, and balance. The list goes on and on and on.

Deb Angus, brain injury survivor and author of “Regaining Consciousness: My Encounter with Mild Brain Injury--the Silent Epidemic," will share her story about how she and her husband were sitting at a stoplight and how a distracted driver changed her life forever.

Every TBI survivor and caregiver has encountered a fork in the road that has diverted his or her life-plan. A car accident, a fall from the roof, doing one more chin-up, an IED blast, or a door literally slamming one in the face are just some causes of traumatic brain injury. College, walking down the aisle in the perfect dress, or the coveted job quickly slips from reality as dreams turn to struggle. These unexpected life-happenings that divert one from his or her chosen path in life can be devastating.

But as Yogi Berra once said, “If you come to a fork in the road, take it.” Life is all about choices!

Another Fork in the Road: Rosemary Rawlins, Caregiver & Author

    in Education

It only takes a split second for lives to change forever. Rosemary and Hugh Rawlins lives were turned upside down when Hugh was struck by a car during an afternoon bike ride. Rosemary was immediately thrust into caregiver mode as Hugh was reduced to helplessness. Rosemary's book, "Learning by Accident: A Caregiver’s True Story of Fear, Family, and Hope," details, in an easy-to-read story, how she and Hugh, with their two daughters, picked up the broken pieces of their lives and glued them back together.

Another Fork in the Road Interview with Bob Calvert, Host of Talking with Heroes

    in Education

Bob Calvert, host of “Talking With Heroes” on Blogtalk Radio, will be my guest this week. Bob has made numerous trips to Iraq and Afghanistan where he talks with and brings hope to the troops serving in our military. Did you know TBI (traumatic brain injury) is the signature injury of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars? Estimates state that more than 11,000 troops are affected with brain injury because of explosions from IEDs (improvised explosive devices), and many more troops experience concussions from blasts. Often there are no obvious effects of brain injury until much later.

So what happens to troops in the field? How can a commanding officer identify a troop who has a concussion? What happens to troops when they come home with brain injuries? Bob and I will talk about how his show helps troops in the field and about the problems they face when they return home. Caregiver, Jeannette Davidson-Mayer and brain injury survivor, Juliet Madsen will join Bob and me.

"Another Fork in the Road" Joshua Puckett - Artist, Musician, & TBI Survivor

    in Education

Joshua Puckett was just minding his business in his own front yard when he was attacked by a "random drunk person" causing his brain injury. Now he says he has a "memory of a fish." Memory problems combined with balance issues, anger, and confusion have become the "new norm" in his new life. But, Joshua is overcoming his deficits by directing his attentions to his art and his music. Both are opening new doors in this talented young man's life.

Another Fork in the Road: Allan Bateman - Preventive & Rehabilitative Therapist

    in Education

If you have a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) it’s most likely you will enter the world of therapy. Sometimes it is only for a few months. Sometimes it lasts for years. Therapies can include Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Activities of Daily Living, Speech Therapy, and Cognitive Therapy to name a few. Because of the duration and intimacy of therapies, often survivors develop strong relationships with their therapists. That’s what happened when Preventive and Rehabilitative Therapist, Allan Bateman entered my husband’s (and my life). Allan sees his client as a whole person and individualizes each client’s therapy to fit his or her needs. Allan will share his ideas with my listeners.

The Covenant of Salt & Light: Christians are still the Light of the World.

    in Christianity

Jane and Jon will discuss James L. Bailey's book "Contrast Community" and the deeper meaning of Matthew 5.Is forgiveness of our own possession or a command by God?  Jane will also discuss chapter 3 on how Christians are to be the salt of the earth.

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.  Matthew 5:13-16

“Alice came to a fork in the road. 'Which road do I take?' she asked.

'Where do you want to go?' responded the Cheshire Cat.

    'I don't know,' Alice answered.

'Then,' said the Cat, 'it doesn't matter.”  ? Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

I share a story about Jerry show who was shot in a robbery.

Every human being has to make choices….to choose a path.

I will tell you a story of Monty Roberts and much more...

At the very end I share a story...you might want to get the Kleenex.

“Ye are the salt of the earth, so let your light shine” Matthew 5:13-20

    in The Bible

Inspirational Wednesday, Hosted by Dianne Adams, Wednesday, March 11, 2015 @ 8:30 P.M.

“Ye are the salt of the earth, so let your light shine”

    Matthew 5:13-20

13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
