Starting at Rosh Hashanah, Israel will be going through the Shmitta [Sabbatical] year. Why is that significant? Because it's one way of signifying that Israel [and the world] belongs to G-d. Just as the Jewish people get a rest day one day of the week [Shabbat], the land is to rest every seven years. The Torah gives two reasons to observe Shabbat: to acknowledge G-d as the creator and to remember their liberation form Egypt [Mitzrayim]. Shabbat ultimately sends the Jew two messages: that they acknowledge G-d as the ultimate sovereign and that they're not slaves. And with letting the land rest, it is to acknowledge that the land belongs to G-d. Just as the neshama Yehudi [Jewish soul] naturally clings to Torah, G-dliness, and mitzvot, the land of Israel is a holy land, as seen even from Jewish law [Halacha]. Even when eating, the Jew acknowledges the holiness of Israel. For instance, for olives and apples, both of which is haetz, olives take priority just by being one of the seven species of fruit that Israel is praised for. And the Shmitta acknowledges G-d as the sovereign. It goes back to what Rashi said, when he said that the reason why the Torah did not begin with the first mitzvah, but with the creation of the world, was so then Israel can say that G-d ultimately gave the land to them if the other nations accuse Israel of stealing Canaanite land. Just as Shabbat is something from G-d that's out of this world, so too, Shmitta is something from G-d out of this world. The difference is that whereas the Jew goes by days, Eretz Yisrael [the Land of Israel] goes by years. But it's still the same principle. Shmitta also teaches that just as Klal Yisrael [the community of Israel] is holy, the land is also holy as well and is not merely something to be walked on and taken for granted.

This week, we are so proud to have as our guest, National Teacher of the Year - Mr. Sean McComb. Mr. McComb is a 9-12th grade English teacher at Patapsco High School & Center for the Arts in Baltimore, Maryland. He is currently completing his eighth year as an educator and has been at Patapsco since beginning his teaching career.
“A strong teacher-student relationship facilitates the opportunity for deeper learning and more critical thinking,” says McComb. He firmly believes that public education is the foundation for opportunity and success for any child. In addition to his role as an English instructor, McComb helped develop, and continues to spearhead, Patapsco’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program which boasted a 98% college acceptance rate for its last two graduating classes.
McComb’s devotion to the teaching profession extends beyond the classroom as well. He also coaches the Patapsco Cross Country Team, supervises cultural exchange programs, and has led several university training sessions and presentations for future teachers. McComb says that he has found his purpose in teaching stating, “I have worked to engage my students and push them to achieve the excellence within them. Every child deserves nothing less, and my calling is to champion that effort.”
He holds a B.A. in English Literature and a Masters of Education in English Literature from the University of Pittsburgh. He also holds a Certificate in School Improvement Leadership from Goucher College.
Each week, WatchDOGS Radio host Keith Schumacher and co-host Chris Danenhauer discuss how this program is impacting families and schools across our nation and in four foreign countries.
Tonight we explore some of the psychological and social meaning behind a news story that tells of a nine year old girl accidently killing a shooting instructor when she lost control of the Uzi machine gun she was firing at a range in Arizona. The child was on vacation with her family when she was brought to a facility that often allows children to act out our collective fantasy to shoot deadly weapons. The range then offers helicopter trips to see the grand canyon. The story is gererally presented in the media as just another tragic accident in the normal, moral life of an American family. We will try and explain why it is normal and moral for children to fire weapons of mass destruction as part of our ongoing dehumanization and zombification. I will also retell the story of the beheading of two reporters in Iraq and the trouble in Ferguson ans why these incidents are also normal and moral. Finally, we will discuss the cliche and myth that there are "good" people and "bad" people.
In isportsweb radio's first episode, host Ryan Dunne will talk about rookie quarterbacks who were drafted in the first round and how they have done so far and what we expect. First, he will talk about Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles and how he looked in his first game action. Next, Cleveland Browns writer Chris Edel will join the show to discuss Johnny Manziel and the competition between him and Brian Hoyer. Finally, we will end the show with having Minnesota Vikings writer Randall Brakob call in to discuss Teddy Bridgewater and how he has looked so far against Matt Cassel.
