Welcome to the next installment of our New Evangelization Series! This series is designed to give practical ideas and tools for Catholics to use as they reach out to our fellow Catholic brothers and sisters as well as non-Catholics.
If you've ever been on an internet forum or social networking site, you may have seen how people debate nowadays. It usually results in name calling, character attacks, and generally does nothing to address the issue at hand. We have become so emotionally attached to a difference in opinion with another that we are unable to have an honest, intellectual discussion.
Our guest for today's show, Dr Glenn Ricketts, will discuss the decline in the art of debate and rhetoric, which used to be a part of a classical liberal arts education. He will also discuss ways in which we can approach a debate about a hot topic with logical reasoning, personal detachment, and intellectual honesty. It is important for us to articulate the Faith through our gifts of intelligence and reason.
Dr Ricketts is a professor at Raritan Valley Community College in New Jersey and is also the Public Affairs Director at the National Association of Scholars. The National Association of Scholars is an independent membership association of academics and others working to foster intellectual freedom and to sustain the tradition of reasoned scholarship and civil debate in America’s colleges and universities.

I love that I live in this time of online social networking.
I can easily interact with smart people... People waaaay smarter than me and more insightful.
Thanks to this wild world of social networking I was able to interact with and ultimately schedule a show with this fella Rhetoric Resurrected.
We're going to dig into this whole business with being a Black person in the south that simply isn't convinced that any diety exists from any religion.
So grab a glass, have a sip and sit your ass down.
You're in the Wine Cellar with Father Teresa, and I'd love to be held responsible for how intoxicated you get in place of non-worship.
Enjoy the show.
Join the LIONS as WE discuss the ISSUE of Black Power! What is Black Power? Do those who claim Black Power really know what it means? How do WE produce Black Power, and how do WE motivate and inspire Black People to even DESIRE Black Power?!! Tune in and JOIN OUR discussion!
RFS is a recently recognized affliction suffered by millions of black women. Most do not know they have it, as the rhetoric is dispensed on a daily basis, and many have built up a resistance over the years. Rhetoric Fatigue Syndrome is the umbrella term for a vast array of symptoms such as:
GTFOHWTBSitis SICKOFYOSHYTitis NINJAPLEASEitis A further, often overlooked symptom of RFS includes instant headache and blurred eyesight whenever a black man asks a black woman to solve their behavior ("how do you plan on preventing further damage in the future") or places blame on society (the white people who have been plotting on the demise of the black community) for their behavior.
In advanced stages of RFS, women experience instant migraines upon hearing the words 'Willie Lynch' and/or 'it all goes back to slavery'. Relief is temporarily experienced when black men actually take responsibility for their own actions instead of blaming others, but that relief is often short lived.
Liberals are afraid of black conservatives. Black conservatives mean the end to their rhetoric and threaten to shatter the chains of dependency. Harriet Tubman said, “I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more; if only they knew they were slaves.” If only Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman were here now to stand with Allen West, Carson , Sowell , Mia Love, Brenda Jordan and many more...
In comparison, modern black “leaders” like Jesse Jackson Jr. and Al Sharpton are tiny and self-serving. They don’t serve black Americans or champion freedom and liberty for all. They champion liberal politics and ideology, and that’s odd; liberals want to see blacks tucked neatly into the roles of their design.
There has been much written about the racial rhetoric that has permeated political discourse since President Obama took office, and the media often highlights the racially inflammatory language used by some of his opponents. But racially charged language targeting black Republicans rarely receives much coverage, further fueling conservative suspicion of the mainstream media.
Yet, neither Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, nor the liberal elites who prop them up represent the true values of the black community. Most black folks oppose abortion, support traditional marriage and favor school choice. Black leaders ignore these facts and dance to the tune of their liberal benefactors. My convictions come from my proud black father who took me out of foster care, raised me as a single Dad and never took a dime of government assistance. They come from my church upbringing which taught me to trust God, not government. Black conservatives want to break the cycle of poverty in the black community, not use it to perpetuate the grievance industry. Who are the real sell-outs? Who are the real racists?"
