Our guest, Elli Sparks, embodies this vision Her biodynamic permaculture farm, where she has been increasing the carbon sucking capacity of her pastures with mob grazing, is called Sacred Foods Farm.The name comes from the research done by Dr. Weston A. Price and the book he wrote that collected together in one place the food wisdom of our ancestors.It is this wisdom that has helped Elli heal from rheumatoid arthritis and depression.
She was the co-founding member of the Richmond Chapter of Citizens Climate Lobby. She is building relationships with members of Congress, their aides, and the local newspaper’s editorial board for the purpose of ensuring her own children’s health, security, and wellbeing.
Her children's stories, available from her in manuscript form, are “Papa, Tell Me a Story” about the time Earth very nearly lost her people and “If You Ask Your Congressman to Be a Climate Hero.”
In an article for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Sparks writes:
"Perhaps more than most issues, climate change is a spiritual challenge with a political solution that industry must implement. We will need elected leaders and captains of industry to ground themselves spiritually. They will need to act from a place of love, not fear. Free will, I believe, only works when it comes from a place of love. In the main event, for the URC Flyweight Championship, defending champion Oscar Ramirez (9-2) battles Cody "the Spider Monkey" Walsh (1-3) in a rematch from 2010 which Ramirez won via TKO. Ramirez is one of the pillars of URC and defends his Flyweight Title for the first time. Ramirez is a fast starter and likes to attack his opponent at the opening bell. Look for Ramirez to come out swinging and if the fight hits the mat, he will be very active and looking to lock on an armbar or choke to stop the fight. For the challenger Walsh, this is the biggest fight of his career. What he gives up in experience he makes up for in grit and determination. He is a totally different fighter than the one that Ramirez beat three years ago and this is the perfect opportunity, with a title on the line, for Walsh to get his payback. In other action, "Bad" Brad Robasciotti (3-2) fights Derek Harris (2-0) in a light heavyweight matchup. Robasciotti is a former URC Champion and looks to get back in the title hunt with an impressive win over Harris. Robasciotti is a heavy handed fighter who likes to land strikes on his feet and then follow up with strong ground and pound on the mat. Harris is undefeated with both wins coming via stoppage in round one. With a strong all-around game, Harris poses a real threat to Robasciotti. Over the past 30 years the Make-A-Wish Foundation® has granted nearly 300,000 wishes worldwide to children battling life-threatening illnesses, shedding light on worlds darkened by disease, and bringing hope to children and their families.
Rachelle Sparks' new book Once Upon A Wish shines a light on the tremendous good the Foundation has done in helping kids like little Katelyn and wheelchair-bound Garrett.
This book is a source of hope and the idea that wishes do come true.
Background on Rachelle:
Rachelle Sparks was an award-winning journalist for a daily newspaper in Prescott, Arizona, where she wrote stories about the unforgettable “wish” families who became her inspiration for writing Once Upon A Wish. While venturing around the country to interview and capture the stories of the families featured in this book, she worked as a freelance writer for numerous publications, including Arizona Highways Magazine and the Phoenix and San Francisco editions of 944 Magazine. She lives with her husband, Bobby, and their two sons, Andrew and Evan, in San Diego. This is her first book.
