    in Self Help

Show Topic: Gaudenzia is the story of a horse. What happened to this horse? Why did this horse become a symbol in the Recovery community at large, the Daytop community specifically.  Gaudenzia at one time was celebrated in place of Halloween in the Daytop residential treatment facilities.  We'll discuss Gaudenzia and how it relates and connects to those striving to achieve recovery from substance abuse

TREATMENT & RECOVERY: The Under Graduate

    in Self Help

Show Topic:  It is usually after a 18-24 month treatment and recovery process that an addict who enters treatment, successfully completes treatment and all the necessary phases, is ready to present themselves for Graduation. The potential Under Graduate must submit what can only be called a summarized life story thesis focusing on where they were, where they are, and where they're going. We'll discuss what constitutes an Under Graduate. Though essentially they're all different, they all have had to accomplish similar goals to achieve UnderGraduate status.

TREATMENT and RECOVERY: OCGRadio One Year Annversary.............

    in Self Help

It's been a year since we went "live" with this idea to do a live podcast, talking about substance abuse treatment, recovery, Daytop, OCG, and all things in between as it relates to recovery.....or not!  Our 1st show (10/24/14) hastily came together to honor Daytop's founder, the Monsignor William B. O'Brien, who passed away on 10/19/2014. Although we didn't officially start our recovery themed podcast until November 18th, 2014, in reflection, it was fitting that our first show was honoring a man who made recovery possible for so many. We will do a little year in review.

    RECOVERY ROMANCES: The Attraction Distraction

    in Self Help

Show Topic:  The argument against co-ed facilities is buffered by the frequency in which clients in residential treatment facilities are engaging in romantic relationships. The rate of success of these relationships are so low it doesn't even register statisically. These Recovery Romances also initiate in 12 Step support groups, and other recovery formats.  What does register are the recovery processes derailed.  Why do these Recovery Romances get started? Why are the particpants resistant to outside influence against the relationships? Is true individual recovery possible when you are involved in a Recovery Romance? Lets dig down into this dilema.........

TREATMENT and RECOVERY: The Great Sabotage

    in Self Help

Show Topic:  You're progressing through treatment. You've turned the corner. You see the end of the treatment road on the horizon. The end of the safety of the cocoon is near. Your tool kit is stocked. It's now about repetition, practice, and exercising your new or readjusted attitutude and behaviors. Then BOOM (or BAM), you blow it up. You "engineer" a relapse. You SABOTAGE yourself, and the process. Why do we do this to ourselves?!?

TREATMENT and RECOVERY: Dealing with Loss & Grief while in Recovery

    in Self Help

Show Topic:  The culture of addiction and recovery is rife with experiences of grief and loss for the person struggling with addiction or striving for recovery. The nature of these experiences combined with the stigma, shame and general lack of understanding of addiction can make grief and loss associated with addiction lonely and difficult to heal from. The treatment setting can provide an effective healing environment for dealing with past or current loss and grief. We must also learn to deal with this experience outside of the cocoon of the treatment setting. We'll review the various stages of loss and grief, recount some personal experiences, and how as providers we can better help clients through this experience.

THE DAYTOP (OCG) PHILOSOPHY: The Individual's Recovery Manifesto

    in Self Help

Show Topic: The DAYTOP (OCG) Philosophy is a manifesto for the individual seeking to reclaim their lives from the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual grip of addiction. Although written by a client (name unknown) in the mid 1960's and adopted as the Philosophy, it is universal, for all addicts, no matter where they may be seeking to engage the recovery process. We will go between the lines and read between each line to draw out, its true meaning.

TREATMENT & RECOVERY: HOUSE MEETING pt.2 (It's That Time Again)

    in Self Help

Show Topic:  The House Meeting. Every now and then an attitude creeps into the recovery environment.  This attitude is not conducive to recovery, but aims to ridicule it. Make light of it. Make demands of it. That old sense of entitlement begins to rear its head. The physical environment starts to suffer. Before you know it, instead of having a "Hope" house, it looks and behaves like a dope house. Only that old reliable tool of the TC can correct this: The House Meeting.
