Episode 1009: Professional Volunteer Fire Service

    in Training

In many areas of the country, fire departments have implemented junior firefighter programs to help recruit new members. Some departments have experienced great success with the programs, and others have had a difficult time. In addition, some firefighters speak favorably and fully support the programs, and others are against them. On tonight's show, host Tom Merrill and his guest will examine both sides of the issue and discuss the benefits as well as the challenges of having a Junior Firefighter program in our departments.

Our guest tonight is Chief Jeff Cash, who has been in the fire service for over 35 years serving in both career and volunteer departments. He is currently the chief of the Cherryville (North Carolina) FD – a position he has held since 1986 and is the past president of the North Carolina Firemen’s Association and serves as the North Carolina director to the National Volunteer Fire Council – also sits on the NVFC Executive Committee and is a member of the NVFC Junior Firefighter Program Advisory Group.

Hope & Service: Path to Happiness

    in Relationships

Thank you for listening to Happiness Index and we are continuing our conversation on hope and service.   Hope is an optimistic attitude of mind based on an expectation of positive outcomes related to events and circumstances in one's life or the world at large. Vaclav Havel, former President of the Czech Rebubic said, Hope is definitely not the same thing as optimism.  It is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out. We are convinced that everyone who gives of their time to serve others are deeply rooted in hope.  Hope is an optimistic state of confidence and an anticipation that service is hope.  It encourages to believe that your giving of yourself will make a difference.  Hope is a cornerstone of volunteerism. Our focus today will be on the value of hope to inspire us to serve and how hope and service is a path to happiness.  Thank you for listening to Happiness Index on Blog Talk Radio.  Join us in this conversation and make the world better for all, call (347) 539-5818.
