Rod Rutherford finished his third season on the IUP staff as a wide receivers' coach anda recruiting coordinator in 2013.
Under the coaching of Rod Rutherford in 2013, first team All-PSAC wide receiver Terrill Barnes was the first Crimson Hawk to go over 1,000 yards since Carmelo Ocasio in 2002. Barnes finished the season with 63 receptions, rushing for 1,014 yards and 8 touchdowns. Barnes went over 150 yards in three games and had a receiving touchdown in eight of eleven games.
In 2012, Rutherford was part of a coaching staff that led the Hawks to a 12-2 record and a NCAA playoff appearance.
Prior to IUP, Rutherford spent the 2009 and 2010 seasons as a graduate assistant at Pitt, coaching the linebackers and wide receivers. Rutherford was part of a Pitt team that won 10 games for the first time since 1981.
During the 2008 season, Rutherford coached the defensive backs and special teams at St. Vincent, and in 2007, he served as a volunteer quarterback coach at Pitt.
Rutherford was a two-year starter at Pitt, starting 26 games and and earning All-Big East first team honors in 2003 and second team honors in 2004. He set the school record for passing yards in a season with 3,679 in 2003.
In 2004, Rutherford signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent. The following season he was a member of the practice squad of the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. Rutherford was also a member of the 2007 World Bowl championship Hamburg Seadevils of NFL Europe.

Spears On Sports: Episode 21 (Cuse beats Louisville/Pitt preview)
Matt Chatham and Brady Quinn continue their college football preview series of Power 5 conferences by headiing out to the ACC. Florida State has owned the conference in recent years, with most discussions centering on whether or not the strength of the conference was enough to keep FSU on top while staying undefeated.
The guys start by discussing this year's big Boston College vs Notre Dame game to be played November 21st at Fenway Park, and how cool games in historic venues can positiviely affect players and recruiting.
2015 figures to be a much more competitive affair at the top of the conference as question marks abound - specifically from a collection of close-but-not-quite-there programs like Clemson, Georgia Tech, Louisville, and Virginia Tech looking to climb to the top of the heap as Florida State reloads. The guys get into the keys to winning the conference, some sleeper schools to keep an eye on, and a discussion of the year ahead for some of the conference's best players.
