Episode 176: Fallujah Awakens with Bill Ardolino
How did the US Marine Corps and local tribal leaders turn the corner in Fallujah? Who were the people on the ground, Iraqi and American, who were the catalyst for the change that brought about a sea change in the tactical, operational, and strategic direction in Iraq?
Our guest for the full hour to discuss that and more will be author Bill Ardolino. We will use as a base of our discussion his new book, Fallujah Awakens: Marines, Sheikhs, and the Battle Against al Qaeda.
Bill is the associate editor of The Long War Journal. He was embedded with the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Army, the Iraqi Army, and the Iraqi Police in Fallujah, Habbaniyah, and Baghdad in 2006, 2007, and 2008, and later with U.S. and Afghan forces in Kabul, Helmand and Khost provinces in Afghanistan. His reports, columns, and photographs have received wide media exposure and have been cited in a number of academic publications. He lives in Washington, DC.

A Mother's Worth: Celebrating Motherhood
Susan and Jenny discuss Susans newly published book, A Mothers Worth on this Mothers Day Special Show!
A Mother's Worth: Celebrating Motherhood is a soft cover, inspirational, all occasion, picture book for mothers of all ages written with simple, yet powerful, text and illustrated with heartwarming photographs.
It reaffirms that a mother's worth can't be calculated by examining her bank account. Mothers have many jobs to do for their families and their reward is in the form of love, not money.
The book promotes nurturing mothering. Because breastfeeding is a natural part of motherhood one image depicts an infant nursing. Ethnically diverse military families were primarily photographed for the book giving it special significance. A Mother’s Worth: Celebrating Motherhood is the perfect gift for mothers and grandmothers.

Seeing the world through a different lens with Joey L.
Very few young commercial photographers have received as much attention and acclaim as Joey L. A professional photographer by age 16, Joey's career began shooting his friends' bands and evolved into shooting well-known television and movie ads as well as celebrity portratiture - all of which we would recognize today even if the "Joey L." name doesn't register with us. However, perhaps his greatest work to this day is not his commercial pursuits - but his pursuits in filming indigenous peoples in a new and different light. Those who follow their passion clearly light their own path, and this is evidently seen and heard throughout the third episode of SUMMER RAYNE OAKES Conversations where Joey L. expresses a holistic view of his own work, shares what he fears the most, and how he sees the world through a different lens. The episode touches upon his latest film (a recent Kickstarter success), People of the Delta, set in the Omo Valley of Southern Ethiopia as well as his percipient philosophy on getting to know the people he photographs.
