Fred Phelps, reviled (and excommunicated) pastor of Westboro Baptist Church, built his life upon a foundation of hatred: the protests of military funerals, the condemnation of homosexuals, professed gratitude to God for terrorist attacks, and much more.
Recent news reports of Fred Phelps' death have again brought his name and face to worldwide attention, prompted by a public statement from his own son, Nathan, who escaped Wesboro and has become a champion of human rights in the face of his father's hatred.
In this podcast, we talk to Nathen Phelps. About his father. About his father's death. About the celebratory public response. About the Westboro legacy. And about the often conflicted feelings of a father's son at a time when he is denied access, or should he choose it, the opportunity to say "goodbye."
Join us for a compelling discussion.
He may have been a horrible person. He may have spewed hatred and bigotry. He may have been one of the worst people ever. Fred Phelps was still better than god.
Why am I thankful for the Westboro Baptist Church? Why do I feel I owe a sincere debt of gratitude to the Phelps clan? What the hell is wrong with me?
Tune in to find out. Plus your calls.

Tonight at 8pm ET on Ernest Radio Network, it's The Ernest Experience Radio Show.
We are live tonight, talking about spanking. Recently Momo B. posted a video of a dad beating...oops, speaking his 13 year old daughter while holding her by the hair of the head. Oh, did we mention he's also doing it in the middle of the street? Does spanking promote violence in society? When does spanking turn into abuse? We're all chiming in on this one.
Speaking of spanks, we're also talking about sex toys. Last week Ms. Teri talked about her chest, not that chest - but her toy chest, and we wondered - what does she have in that thing, anyway?! We're gonna ask Momo B. the same question, but we might have to leave Richsistah out on this one. She barely has a cricket phone, much less anything else that runs on batteries! HA!
All this plus NPR news, weather.com 7-day forecast, music by fDeluxe (formerly The Family), and so much more. Ernest is also giving a 3-minute commentary at the top of the 2nd hour on the death of Westboro Baptist Church founder, and hate-monger, Fred Phelps. The phones will be open at 1.347.989.1942. I find it baffling that human beings are unable, and unwilling, to remember to love one another, and to "do unto others, as we would have them do unto us" in today's world.
