What is perscution? Is it someone talking bad about you? Is it touching God's anointed? Has Western Christianity suffered from persecution? What do believers who live in countries where Christianity is illegal, and the open practice of it may have deadly consequences, think when they hear Western Christians say they are being persecuted? Would you consider these things persecution; no prayers in schools, the removal of the 10 commandments from government buidlings, the taking down of nativity scenes, pro gay marriage laws being passed. It seems that whenever the ekklesia was under the threat of real persecution, it thrived and grew. What happend, when the persecution stopped? In this lesson Peter continues to discuss persecution. In the earlier chapter Peter deals with preparing for persecution 1Peter 3:13-18. In this setting he takes a quick slant that relates to persevering.
While we might not ever endure "physical" persecution, it is unlikely that we will escape occasional "verbal" or "social" persecution.
Therefore, this lesson can be of great benefit to help us persevere in such circumstances
in The Bible
Every Christian knows that we will all suffer persecution at some point in some way. The only question is, when and how. There are different types of persecution, and different causes that bring it on. Sometimes it is caused by jealousy, others times it stems from pain. There is persecution from the world, and there is persecution from within the Church. God has given us a prescription that tells us exactly how to handle it. This week we will talk about what God really says about how to get over offense, regardless of its cause or source. The History of Christianity #29
Our Scripture verse today is Acts 8:4 which reads: "Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word."
Our quote today is from Theophilus of Antioch. He said: "Say to those that hate and curse you, You are our brothers!"
Today, we are examining "Persecution in the Second Century" (Part 5) from Dr. Justo L. Gonzalez's fine book, The Story of Christianity (Volume 1).
Today's subject is Toward the End of the Second Century
Marcus Aurelius died in 180 and was succeeded by Commodus, who had begun to rule jointly with him eight years earlier. Although Commodus did not issue any edicts against persecution, the storm abated during his reign, and the number of martyrs was relatively low. After the death of Commodus, there was a period of civil war, and Christians were once again ignored in favor of more pressing matters. Finally, in 193, Septimius Severus became master of the empire. At first, Christians were able to live in peace under his reign. But eventually he too added his name to the growing list of those who had persecuted the church. However, since this was early in the third century, we shall return to it at another point in our narrative.
In summary, during the entire second century Christians were in a precarious position. They were not constantly persecuted. Sometimes they were persecuted in some areas of the empire, and not in others. Since the general policy of the empire was that outlined by Trajan -- Christians were not to be sought, but, if brought before the authorities, they must be forced to recant or be punished - the good will of their neighbors was very important...
in The Bible
We all know we are looking at the end times and the soon return of Jesus. And for those of us who are looking up and preparing for His soon return we WILL face persecution.
See Matthew 5:10-12
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness'sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
The shadows of this last day are lengthening and I know that Jesus Christ is coming soon. And a mark of the last days actually being fulfilled right now and that's the persecution of the saints of God. And sadly Bible believing Christians are the new whipping boys in the world today. Ridicule other groups today you'll get in trouble, but today Bible-believing Christians are fair game. We've become the butt of jokes, and soon we'll receive the wrath of the world!
The truth is there's no way to be a genuine Christian and escape persecution. (2 Timothy 3:12)
There are no ifs, ands, and buts about that... ALL who determine to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
So this message is all about how to preparing for persecution.
So stay tuned to learn about the reasons for persecution: for righteousness sake, for the life we live and for The LORD we love. And the results of persecution: They will revile, persecute and say all manners of evil against us falsely. And finally how to respond when persecuted like a king, rejoicing in The LORD and with love!
Tonights program will feature teaching on the subject of persecution
in The Bible
What exactly is it our adversary wants to achieve with persecution? And how does God tell us to respond? Every Believer will face persecution. The more we attempt to do for Christ, the more persecution we will experience. It is an absolute MUST that we can quickly identify and recognize persecution for what it is, regardless of its source; and then understand how we are to properly respond to it. Only when we respond appropriately can we expect access to God's grace and protection in the situation.
in The Bible
There are all kinds of persecutions, false accusations, oppression from someone with authority, violence, imprisonmentn, harassment. It can even be a word of discouragement that is meant to derail us in some way or from some worthwhile goal. Regardless of the form persecution takes, it is something every Christian will experience, and it is always from the enemy of our soul, Satan. It is always meant to harm us in some way. Our victory over persecution begins with recognition. Join us today at 4 pm for Part 2 of this important message.
The History of Christianity #28
Our Scripture passage today is Matthew 5:12 which reads: "Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you."
Our quote today is from Tertullian. He said: "Only without the sword can the Christian wage war: the Lord has abolished the sword."
Today, we are discussing "Persecution in the Second Century" (Part 4) from Dr. Justo L. Gonzalez's fine book, The Story of Christianity (Volume 1).
Today's subject is Persecution Under Marcus Aurelius
Marcus Aurelius, who became emperor in 161 AD, possessed one of the most enlightened minds of his age. He was not, like Nero and perhaps Domitian, enamored with power and vainglory. On the contrary, he was a refined man who left behind a collection of Meditations, written for his private use, which are literary masterpieces of the time. He expresses some of the ideals with which he tried to rule his vast empire:
Think constantly, both as a Roman and as a man, to do the task before you with perfect and simple dignity, and with kindness, freedom, and justice. Try to forget everything else. And you will be able to do so if you undertake every action in your life as if it were the last, leaving aside all negligence and the opposition of passion to the dictates of reason, and leaving aside also all hypocrisy, egotism, and rebelliousness against your own lot.
Under such an emperor, it could be expected that Christians would enjoy a period of relative peace. And yet, the same emperor who expressed such lofty ideals regarding government also ordered that Christians be persecuted....
