The Pau Gasol-for-Andrew Bynum trade talks appear to be dormant but not dead.
The Lakers would like to get another worthy asset thrown into in the deal ... but so would the Cavs. And you know what? I have to side with the Cavs and general manager Chris Grant on this one.
By taking Gasol's $19.3 million salary off the Lakers' books, they will drop Los Angels below the luxury tax threshold, saving the Buss family in the area of $20 million. But that's only the start of it. The Lakers also will be under the tax next season, and that gets them out of danger of being subject to the dreaded repeater tax, which is levied against teams that exceed the tax threshold four times in five seasons.
So it's not just the current $20 million that the Cavs would be saving the Buss family, it is untold tens of millions more in two seasons when the Lakers figure to be a taxpaying team once again in the final season of Kobe Bryant's extension.
So multiply that $20 million by a factor of at least two -- probably more given the punitive nature of the repeater tax, and you get an idea of how valuable acquiring and waiving Bynum can be to the Buss family fortune.
Which is why if I am Chris Grant, I keep saying "no" to Los Angeles unless and until they throw Nick Young into the deal.
More on that trade, other trade chatter ... and a closer look at the struggling Memphis Grizzlies in this podcast with Three Shades of Blue radio on WHBQ radio in Memphis.

We’ve already told you that the Los Angeles Lakers have Ryan Anderson atop their wish list if they decide to trade Pau Gasol, who sat out last night’s loss to the Houston Rockets with what the Lakers called “knee tendinitis.”
Guess the “big boy pants” will have to wait for another night.
With each passing day, it appears the likelihood of the Lakers moving Gasol increases. We are now 10 days away from Dec. 15 — the date when players who signed as free agents over the summer (such as Anderson) become trade-eligible.

Welcome back to another edition of "The Jay Byrd Show!" I know everyone is getting tired of deflate gate but I still have some fresh perspective on the topic that is worthy of discussion. Also I have to give the Gasol Brothers a little love for being named All Star Starters for the first time in NBA History. Plus, someone else in the NBA broke a record of their own last night and more on the Biggest boxing match that will never happen. All of this and more on this edition of "The Jay Byrd Show!"
Tom in NJ joins Dave for an NBA Playoff Preview show. Can the Warriors, Rockets, Hawks, Cavaliers, and Spurs reach their conference championship games or will there be some surprises? Who is the MVP this year: James Harden or Steph Curry? We'll also look at some of the other up and comers like the Blazers making their second playoff appearance in a row led by LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard and the Hornets with Anthon Davis and Tyreke Evans. What's to come in the East? Can Paul Pierce and Bradley Beal overcome an up and down season with the Wizards and put together a good series? What's left for a hobbled Chicago Bulls team against a possible meeting with the up and coming Milwaukee Bucks featuring Giannis, Khris Middleton, and Jerryd Bayless? Will the Nets have a say in this year's playoffs even without former vets KG and Pierce? Can Brook Lopez be a differencemaker for Brooklyn? What's to come with the very deep and talented Memphis Grizzlies with Mike Conley, Marc Gasol, and Zach Randolph? Plus we look at the teams that didn't make it -- what went wrong for the Miami Heat and the Oklahoma City Thunder? And look at this -- the Boston Celtics made the playoffs?! A most different and interesting playoff year awaits with Tom and Dave at the preview PLUS Random Q's w/ Kevin on the Cape in Hour 1, which includes a report by Dave from the Dodgers game last night. The NBA Preview follows in Hour 1 as we look towards "win or go home" time.

The Chicago Bulls played terrible basketball last night in their 95-91 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, a potential 1st round playoff opponent. Derrick Rose is still unsure of his return date, but remains consistent with his terrible media sessions. Chicago Bears new GM Ryan Pace continues to make roster moves during free agency, adding more depth to the depleted defense and replacing a long-tenured member of the offensive line. The Final Four is this Saturday, and two of the best college coaches face off when Tom Izzo's Spartans of Michigan State will take on Mike Krzyzewski and his Duke Blue Devils. Will 7th seeded Michigan St. keep their dream season alive? I've got the preview and my pick. Also, the Blackhawks are in crunch time with the Western Conference standings tightening. They take on the Vancouver Canucks tonight, while Patrick Kane has started to skate in practice while recovering from his injury. All this and your phone calls @ (347) 327-9183!
BECAUSE CHICAGO LOVES SPORTS.
If you were expected to do EVERYTHING at your job, you might tear your shirt a la Hulk Hogan sometimes yourself. We will talk about Marc Gasol's frustrations and much more on the latest episode of GBBLive Thursday night April 2nd at 6:30 CST!

How crazy Marc Gasol is exactly will be part of the discussion, as will the current state of the Western Conference Playoff Picture.
The second part of the program welcome back GBB Senior Staff Writer Matt Hrdlicka to the BlogTalkRadio airwaves. How much he still dislikes the Jeff Green trade will be a topic of conversation, in addition to the mindset of Marc Gasol and whether or not Memphis should prioritize rest over the race for the division title and 2 seed.
Finally, Issac Simpson of Yahoo 730's "Man Cave SportsShow" on Fridays from 3-5 in Memphis joins Joe and Chip for the final segment of the evening. Getting Courtney Lee right and previewing the week ahead at home for the Grizzlies will be the focus of Issac, Joe and Chip.
