The Pau Gasol-for-Andrew Bynum trade talks appear to be dormant but not dead.
The Lakers would like to get another worthy asset thrown into in the deal ... but so would the Cavs. And you know what? I have to side with the Cavs and general manager Chris Grant on this one.
By taking Gasol's $19.3 million salary off the Lakers' books, they will drop Los Angels below the luxury tax threshold, saving the Buss family in the area of $20 million. But that's only the start of it. The Lakers also will be under the tax next season, and that gets them out of danger of being subject to the dreaded repeater tax, which is levied against teams that exceed the tax threshold four times in five seasons.
So it's not just the current $20 million that the Cavs would be saving the Buss family, it is untold tens of millions more in two seasons when the Lakers figure to be a taxpaying team once again in the final season of Kobe Bryant's extension.
So multiply that $20 million by a factor of at least two -- probably more given the punitive nature of the repeater tax, and you get an idea of how valuable acquiring and waiving Bynum can be to the Buss family fortune.
Which is why if I am Chris Grant, I keep saying "no" to Los Angeles unless and until they throw Nick Young into the deal.
More on that trade, other trade chatter ... and a closer look at the struggling Memphis Grizzlies in this podcast with Three Shades of Blue radio on WHBQ radio in Memphis.
We’ve already told you that the Los Angeles Lakers have Ryan Anderson atop their wish list if they decide to trade Pau Gasol, who sat out last night’s loss to the Houston Rockets with what the Lakers called “knee tendinitis.”
Guess the “big boy pants” will have to wait for another night.
With each passing day, it appears the likelihood of the Lakers moving Gasol increases. We are now 10 days away from Dec. 15 — the date when players who signed as free agents over the summer (such as Anderson) become trade-eligible.
Welcome back to another edition of "The Jay Byrd Show!" I know everyone is getting tired of deflate gate but I still have some fresh perspective on the topic that is worthy of discussion. Also I have to give the Gasol Brothers a little love for being named All Star Starters for the first time in NBA History. Plus, someone else in the NBA broke a record of their own last night and more on the Biggest boxing match that will never happen. All of this and more on this edition of "The Jay Byrd Show!"
Tonight I'll break down the surprising Bulls win over the Golden State Warriors, perhaps the best team in the NBA. Derrick Rose had a tough night but made the shot that mattered. I'll also break down the Blackhawks loss to the L.A. Kings last night and give my thoughts on the state of the Hawks, plus their budding rivalry with the Kings. I have two questions for you tonight: Are you giving credit to Rose for the game-winner, or judging him for the 11 turnovers? And, which team do you see going further in the playoffs, Bulls or Blackhawks?

I welcome in host of Chicago's Gamenight on ESPN1000 Jonathan Hood. Jonathan and I will discuss the hiring of John Fox as the new head coach of the Chicago Bears, as well as other position coach and coordinator hirings the Bears made this week. We'll also talk about the continued slump of the Chicago Bulls, who have lost 6 of their last 8 games and play a very tough San Antonio Spurs team tonight.
Later in the program I will be taking callers. What do you want to talk about? Bears? Bulls? Blackhawks? Wrigley Field bleachers? I'm all ears! Call in!
Tonight I talk about the recent struggles of the Chicago Bulls, including last night's 105-99 loss to the visiting Washington Wizards. What is wrong with this team, which has lost 4 of its last 5 games? What piece is missing? Also, rumors are swirling that John Fox is going to be hired as the next Head Coach of the Chicago Bears. Do you like this hire? We'll talk about Fox's credentials, and the Bears front office uncharacteristically hiring someone with previous head coaching experience. And what position do you want the Bears to focus on in the upcoming NFL draft? I'll be taking callers! I want to hear what you think!

Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat held their own against the Cleveland Cavaliers, handing King James a 101-91 loss in his highly-anticipated return to South Beach.
John Wall dazzled in a matinee affair at Madison Square Garden, tallying 24 points, 11 assists, and six rebounds, as the Washington Wizards defeated the New York Knicks, 102-91.
Behind Russell Westbrook's 34 points and 11 assists, the Oklahoma City Thunder earned a hard-fought road victory over the defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs.
Derrick Rose poured in 20 points to go along with six assists and two rebounds as the Chicago Bulls defeated the Los Angeles Lakers, 113-93.
Despite shooting just 39 per cent from the field, the Los Angeles Clippers handed the Golden State Warriors their second consecutive loss. Jamal Crawford led the way offensively for the Clippers, recording a game-high 24 points on 8-for-18 shooting.

The best record in the NBA is now shared by the Memphis Grizzlies and the Golden State Warriors, thanks to Stephen Curry finally sinking a game-winning 3-pointer for the 'Dubs to give them a victory over the Orlando Magic last night.
At 15-2, the teams sit atop the Western Conference. Both were highly regarded coming into this season, but neither was expected to get off to a start this good. We will get to judge them against each other in a little more than two weeks when they lay each other for the first time.
So until then, we debate.
The Warriors have a 10-game winning streak and lead the NBA in point differential at 10.0 per game; while the Grizzlies are third in point differential at 8.1 and take a five-game winning streak into tonight's game against the Houston Rockets.
Golden State's two losses came back-to-back against the Phoenix Suns and the San Antonio Spurs back on Nov. 9 and Nov. 11. The Grizzlies two defeats came Nov. 8 at Milwaukee and Nov. 19 at Toronto.
The Grizzlies are 11-0 against the West, and I have Marc Gasol leading Stephen Curry in the latest edition of my weekly MVP rankings.
I talked about the Grizzlies, the Warriors, and the merits of Gasol vs. Curry in the MVP race in this interview with Gary Darby on "The Eric Hasseltine Show" on 92.9 ESPN Radio in Memphis. Enjoy.
