Every ten minutes another name is added to the national organ transplant waiting list. More than 120,000 men, women and children currently need lifesaving organ transplants. The United Network for Organ Sharing also reports that an average of 18 people die each day from a lack of available organs for transplant. Jessica Pearlman and Anthony Pugliese know what it’s like to be on that waiting list. They also know what it’s like to finally receive an organ that allows them to live another day. Emily Wiebke, Kathy Keller and Eileen Pearlman will share with us what it’s like to be the mother of a heart transplant recipient. With 90% of Americans saying they support donation but only 30% taking the essential steps to become a donor, this Episode focuses on answering questions about who needs organ donation, why it’s so important to donate organs and the difference organ donation can make in the lives of families.

Nano BioSensors: Nasal, Organ and Biological Systems Monitoring
In the 1966 film Fantastic Voyage, a group of scientists board a submarine and are shrunk down to a microscopic size in order to enter the bloodstream of a diplomat and save their life from a bloodclot. While this remains an idea of science fiction, we are forever moving closer to a time when fantastic ideas such as these come to fruition - though not in a way we expected.
This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy will discuss the concept of using nanotechnology as bio-sensors, and the benefits and dangers of their use.
Imagine your body as a highly complex machine - the most complex ever created. Through natural processes, this machine runs itself. When your body temperature drops, you feel cold. If you lack iron, you may crave red meat or another source from which you are used to getting it. But these processes are automatic and uncontrollable. You can’t tell if you’re getting enough iron until you’re not.
Now imagine if you had a method of constantly monitoring your body’s processes - like the real-time fuel consumption in your vehicle. Using a fairly simple equation, your car knows the rate of fuel it’s burning and approximately when it will run out of gas. What if you knew that you that you were lacking iron before your body even did? This is just one possibility of the use of nano bio-sensors. An In-Depth discussion with Sigrid Fry-Revere, founder and CEO of Stop Organ Trafficking Now! This 501c non-profit, non-partisan agency is dedicated to removing barriers to living organ donation by communicating relevant scholarly research to Congress. SOTN! is lobbying Congress, to support living donors by removing financial disincentives that form often insurmountable barriers to Americans who wish to donate organs. Besides huge savings for Medicare, the proposed legislation could close the staggering kidney supply and demand gap, improve the quality of life for hundreds of thousands of Americans waiting for a kidney, strengthen the penalties for illegal organ trafficking, and help decrease exploitation in developing countries.
The efforts of Sigrid and her organization will have a great impact it donations of organs for those with kidney failur.

Modern-day body snatchers provide bones, tendons and body parts other than transplantable organs to tissue banks, research facilities and other buyers. What they get paid: $600 for a brain, as much as $850 for an elbow, up to $850 for a hand, according to an analysis of market prices for fresh or frozen body parts used for research and education that was conducted by Annie Cheney, author of Body Brokers: Inside America’s Underground Trade in Human Remains.Henrietta Lacks as was an African American woman who went to Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1951 because of a painful knot in her stomach and abnormal bleeding after giving birth to her fifth child. She was diagnosed with cancer and two parts of her cervix were removed (the healthy part and the cancerous part) without her permission. The doctors discovered that Lacks cells kept alive and grew. Her cells were named HeLa and for over six decades, they have been used more 74,000 studies. HeLa were the first human cells to be successfully cloned. The conspiracy theory of blacks being murdered for organs is now being linked to the string of murders that happened in Atlanta during the late 1970s to the early 1980s. It’s known as the Atlanta Child Murders. 28 young victims, who were mostly African American males, were murdered from 1979 to 1981. Wayne Williams was arrested on June 21, 1981 for the deaths of two 22 years old victims. He was indicted on first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. Some believe he was forced into confessing.
In 2008, a former New Jersey dentist Michael Mastromarino was sentenced to 18-54 years in prison after he made millions from selling human organs and tissue. According to reports, he secretly robbed thousands of corpses from funeral homes in New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia. He never screened the parts for disease.

"Human Rights Demand" offers a series of broadcasts for Black History Month 2015 entitled "Secret War on Black America and Victims' Families," which began in late January. During live broadcasts each Wed. in February at 9pm EST, please call (347)857.3293 to speak on air. We began on January 28 and continue today with the Kendrick Johnson story. Kendrick Johnson was a 17-year-old Georgia high school black youth who was murdered and his organs were stolen. His mother and father are on trial in Georgia for civil disobedience. They blocked the Lowndes County Courthouse entrance to demand answers about Kendrick's demise in April 2013. They later filed a lawsuit against 32 parties, including law enforcement and justice officials in Georgia, because they still have been denied due process of law. There is a "Secret War on Black America and Victims' Families" http://freespeakblog.blogspot.com/2015/01/secret-war-on-black-america-and-victims.html
We make a Human Rights Demand that Georgia stop prosecuting grieving parents and prosecute Kendrick Johnson's killers.
