MESSAGE AND THE MUSIC - "WHAT IS KWANZAA..."

    in Radio

As the season of Kwanzaa comes to an end, tonight's "MESSAGE AND THE MUSIC" show is dedicated to the message of Unity, Cooperation and Group Economics through Faith, Creativity, Self-Determination and Purpose.

The seven principles of Kwanzaa are:

Umoja (oo-MO-jah):  Unity stresses the importance of togetherness for the family and the community, which is reflected in the African saying, "I am We," or "I am because We are."

Kujichagulia (koo-gee-cha-goo-LEE-yah): Self-Determination requires that we define our common interests and make decisions that are in the best interest of our family and community.

Ujima (oo-GEE-mah) Collective Work and Responsibility reminds us of our obligation to the past, present and future, and that we have a role to play in the community, society, and world.

Ujamaa (oo-JAH-mah) Cooperative economics emphasizes our collective economic strength and encourages us to meet common needs through mutual

Nia (NEE-yah) Purpose encourages us to look within ourselves and to set personal goals that are beneficial to the Kuumba (koo-OOM-bah) Creativity makes use of our creative energies to build and maintain a strong and vibrant community.

Imani (ee-MAH-nee) Faith focuses on honoring the best of our traditions, draws upon the best in ourselves, and helps us strive for a higher level of life for humankind, by affirming our self-worth and confidence in our ability to succeed and triumph.

America's Deadly Sins - "The Plan" - Brent Swallers, IN

    in Politics

Well, I THOUGHT I wasn't doing the show for a whole week...but a young man who has barely been here any time at all in our facebook circles leapt in to save me from ruin.  By the time I got up and running again...after thinking I WOULDN'T POSSIBLY get up and running again on time, my guest had cancelled.  Ah, but here's the rub:  After missing both Tuesday and Thursday, I thought to take a week off when I found out my payment was overdrawn, and regroup....and think of things I thought might just be deadly to the foster and adoptive businesses (without, of course, ruining the chances of TRULY abused and neglected children), as well as to family courts and the very Jucidiary system itself.  What I came up with has been done, surely...but you have to remember, this is Christopher Bruce we're talking about here, the King of Psycho-Warfare, who, of course, fully intends to put his twisted brand of execution on the plan, making it his own.  Join in tonight as we discuss it!  TIME:  5:OO P.M. CENTRAL TIME.  CALL-IN NUMBER:  347.324.5146.

Calling ALL Brothers- with Pastor AJ Johnson

    in Culture

Please join host Frankie Picasso on Thursday, September, 24th at 1:oo pm EDT when her guest is Pastor Ashley Johnson (A.J),  a 30 yr old  dynamo whose unique combination of faith, passion, zeal and devotion  have put him at the forefront of change and established him as a  leader who is willing to take on the advancement and development of the Greater Hartford community.

One of the ways AJ is leading change, is to reform the perception and stereotypical image that comes to the minds of most black men when they see themselves portrayed in the media today, which is most often in the form of a mugshot or a hashtag.

These dominant and pervasive images provoke an inescapable infection on the nation's psyche; an imprint that distills the identity of black men to nothing more than "dangerous" and "uneducated."

His call to action was to join forces with Public Health attorney DeVaughn Ward and create a group they named, 'CALLING ALL BROTHERS' !

AJ and DeVaugn needed to create a paradigm shift that would change and shape future generations for success.
So on August 25th, they did what any educated black man would do, they gathered 100 of the best and brightest Brothers together, and asked them to dress for work, and come down to Martin Luther Jr. Elementary School to greet the kids on their first day of school. In attendance were lawyers, judges, CEOs, dentists and doctors; who were waiting to give the kids HIGH FIVE's as they got off the school buses.

Why? "All these kids see is homicide after homicide," says Pastor AJ Johnson, who is also a community organizer and pastor at Urban Hope Refuge Church.

"We can't wait for somebody to come and help us. Nobody is going to ride in on a white horse to change the hood. We have to do it." Says AJ Johnson,
