2015 Special Olympics World Games Theme Song Writers join us on REAL TALK SPORTS

    in Sports

This summer, Los Angeles will welcome 7,000 inspirational athletes from 177 different countries to the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games. Supporting children and adults with intellectual disabilities, the World Games is the world’s largest sports and humanitarian event.

To celebrate, The Coca-Cola Company, Founding Partner of Special Olympics, has assembled a star-studded team to record an anthem for the 2015 World Games, titled “Reach Up.” The new song will debut in early June, and will be performed during the Opening Ceremonies at the World Games on July 25.

“Reach Up” features Cody Simpson and Marc Roberge, lead singer for O.A.R., accompanied by Breanna Bogucki, a singer and decorated Special Olympics athlete from Illinois, and Madison Tevlin, a young woman with Down syndrome who found fame earlier this year with her cover of “All of Me.” The grouping was inspired by Special Olympics Unified Sports- a program that brings people with and without intellectual disabilities together on the same team to compete.

Fans can support Special Olympics by sharing the “Reach Up” music video on social media using the hashtag #ReachUp. Coca-Cola will donate one dollar to Special Olympics for every “Reach Up” video share using the hashtag leading up to the World Games.

    Uh Oh-lympics Banned in Boston

    in Politics Progressive

That was quick. Just days ago after over half a year of boosterism (and the incumbent lies), there were promises that the meeting with the US Olympics Committee would go fine, just fine. Instead, Boston's Mayor Walsh pushed back. The Committee said in effect, "We don't need this crap."

I'll talk about how I see the result and why we got there.

There were hidden cost-overrun commitments, closeted bids, hidden contracts while the proponents feigned transparency, and even City Councilor Tito Jackson whipping out the subpoena. Let's think about who was being naive.

6-24-15- Dr. Hildy and Marc the Arc: * 2012: NOW PLAYING EVERYWHERE *

    (2:00-4:00pm Mountain; 3:00-5:00pm Central; 4:00-6:00pm Eastern

    NOTE from Marco*:

Overheard: "Ha. 2012 came and went... and nothing happened! Haha!!"

It's a trick to lull Earthlings into a false sense of security, and as always, the wolf really comes the third time while YOU are not even listening anymore.

Tell the peoples of Fiji or The Maldives - who have water bubbling up through the streets at high tide - that 'nothing happened'. "There's a now this cockeyed notion that IF something is really occurring 'As It Is Written", it  should look like the movie 2012, all happens in a day...and, though we WILL get to the day -or days- of GREAT upheaval, on this episodic I will lay out in NO UNCERTAIN TERMS exactly how  '2012: The Movie' if st-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out over 5 years would allow you to see for yourself what is actually occurring on Earth NOW.... this VERY moment... this EXACT second... RIGHT THIS INSTANT." ...........MORE>>>>>

    Boston Olympics 1 of 2

    in Politics Progressive

Mirabile dictu! Somehow, the IOC chose Boston over San Francisco, Los Angeles and D.C for the US bid to host the 2024 Summer Games.

It's certianly not a done deal. Entries from many other nations are in the running for that — to be settled in 2017. Apparently that will involve much dining and wining, bribing and cajoling. PR meets politics meets pride.I figure Rome or some other city that's already done this will get it.

Meanwhile, Bostonians aer in two camps. One are the hucksters and boosters, typified by ty the Boston 2024 promoters. On the other side are detractors, including those on No Boston Olympics. Next week's show will have one of the three principals of the latter on.

This time, I'll do my best to present the case for the Olumpics. There's much to overcome on the way to winning the bid. The commonwealth's feasibility study on the bid, which came out in February, details the infrastrtucture, venue, transportation and other issues. The boosters say they have it under coontrol or soon to be.

This week is the pro-side run through. Next week will be the anti one.

Special Olympics Host Town Manhattan Beach

    in Current Events

We have two returning guest this morning, Laura Leventhal, Program Coordinator for the Special Olympics World Games and Nancy Vrankovic, Director of Catering and Special Events for Simms Restaurants.

With a background in Strategic Communications and Journalism, Laura has worked with CBS EcoMedia using advertising dollars to fund national community enhancement projects. Laura has explored research in Corporate Social Responsibility, which helped lead her to World Games LA2015 combining an interest in the business of Sports Management and Philanthropy.

Nancy Vrankovic is the Director of Catering and Special Events for Simms Restaurants, a company based in Manhattan Beach with a rich family history in the restaurant business.  She began her career in her family’s restaurants in Arizona as a teen, bussing tables to make gas money.  What began as an after school job blossomed into a career when she began managing a restaurant while attending the University of Arizona. She then worked at the Westin la Paloma where she worked her way up to Catering Sales Manager.

So last month, we featured a panel with the Chairs of the four Beach Cities Host Towns and what it takes to be a Host Town. This morning, we’ll focus on Manhattan Beach's efforts and contributions to the big event.
