In the calm, I find the answer, let's call this a wind down Friday or just a wind down, after a long day of running, not finishing everything we planned for today.
I am going to read a few snippits from different 12 step books share a little bit on them.
What Does Science Tell Us About The Effectiveness of 12 Step Treatment and Other Mutual Help Organizations In Addiction and Recovery?
The most widely recognized 12 Step recovery organizations globally are Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Most people who seek to get and stay sober are referred to a 12 Step recovery program at some point, and some people resist attending based on fear, shame, or the idea that 12 Step programs “don’t work”.
Even within the 12 Step recovery community there is discussion, sometimes, about the effectiveness of these programs. Statistics are thrown around –both for and against – but what does the science say? How effective are these programs?
On this episode, we are honored to have Dr. John F. Kelly as our guest. Dr. Kelly is the Elizabeth R. Spallin Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, the founder and Director of the Recovery Research Institute at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), the Program Director of the Addiction Recovery Management Service (ARMS) and the Associate Director of the Center for Addiction Medicine at MGH.
Dr. Kelly will discuss with us how 12 Step recovery groups impact an individual’s recovery from a scientific perspective. How well do these programs work? Is there a difference in their effectiveness for early versus long-term recovery? Are they more effective following a treatment program? What studies have been done to demonstrate “success” rates of 12 step group members, and how exactly is “success” defined in this environment?
If you participate in a 12 Step recovery program, are considering participating or believe they don’t work but are curious to learn more, this show is for you.
This week Ned, Dan, and Debbie review the first six steps of the 12 step program and help you decide if you are on track.
Step One: We admitted that we were powerless over drugs/alcohol--that our lives had become unmanageable.
Step Two: Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
Step Three: Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God, as we understand Him.
Step Four: Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
Step Five: Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
Step Six: Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
Step 7 of the 12 steps is:
Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
Step 7 is a transformational process that allows us to ask God to help us to begin to remove our shortcomings that we have spent the previous six steps identifying.
Joe Herzanek continues his discussion of the 12 steps and describes how to approach Step 7 and to continue on the road to addiction recovery.

June 2014, governor Rick Perry (and potential GOP 2016 presidential candidate), linked homosexuality with alcoholism. In August 2014, Perry was indicted by a grand jury for abuse of power.
We welcome back Rob Watson, to share insights on a letter he wrote to Perry titled: A Gay Dad Offers Gov. Rick Perry a 12-Step Recovery Program for His Homophobia Problem. As you may guess, this letter went viral.
In the final few minutes of the show, you'll hear Rob read his letter to Perry. Share this letter with anyone who you believe suffers from homophobia.
