National Radon Action Month with Bill Long

    in Health

Doctors of the USA welcomes Bill Long, Director, Center for Radon and Air Toxics, to talk about how to protect yourself and your family from radon. Listen in as he shares the dangers of radon and how you can protect your family’s health by testing your home for radon gas in 2015.

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, estimated to cause about 21,000 deaths per year. It can be found all over the U.S. Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk from radon. EPA and the Surgeon General recommend testing all homes. Radon reduction systems work and they are not too costly. Some radon reduction systems can reduce radon levels in your home by up to 99%. For new homes, radon-resistant construction techniques can be effective in preventing radon entry. When installed properly and completely, these simple and inexpensive techniques can help reduce indoor radon levels in homes.

Bill Long is the Director of the Center for Radon and Air Toxics in EPA’s Indoor Environments Program. He has over 20 years of experience directing national and international environmental programs to improve air quality and save lives at the US EPA.

Check out their website and their  blog.

    Self Aid with Helen Woo

    in Self Help

Helen Woo endured her life. It wasn't living. Raised in a restrictive traditional Chinese-American household, she experienced self-esteem issues, mental and physical abuse, grief, substance abuse, betrayal and depression. Yet she still managed to have a successful career that allowed her to build a bit of a nest egg. Later, when she invested it in a partnership with a close friend, only to have her partner steal all of the assets, that betrayal was the last straw. Alone and raising a son, Woo knew something had to change-and it wasn't the world around her-it was the world within her.

Having experienced a philosophical and spiritual shift, Woo created the concept of SELF-AID--an acronym that stands for Self-Aid (self-help), Esteem, Love/Laughter, Freedom, Attitude, Integrity, Dream. Her new book SELF-AID - Inspirations to Turn Struggles into Success(January, 2015), allows her readers to be inspired and uplifted by the very quotes that ultimately turned her life around. Each quote is followed by one of her unique "Wooisms" - the ideal way to interpret the quote to engineer a shift into a higher and better way of thinking. The book, divided into each of these categories, provides SELF-AID for anyone to lift out of their doldrums or depression and move into a life filled with joy, peace, gratitude and prosperity.

#TeamChaplain - Low Vision and Blindess Awareness Month

    in Radio

Join #TeamChaplain (Chaplain, Patrina, Nancy, Crystal and LaShanda)

Reported by the National Prevention of Blindness, the total economic disorder for eye disorder and vision loss is $139 Billion. (http://www.preventblindness.org)

There is a Focus on Eye Health National Summit, June 18th in Washington DC.  The Focus on Eye Health National Summit was organized to elevate the national dialogue around vision and public health issues.

Common Eye Myths: Failure to use proper glasses will hurt your eyes; reading in dim light can damage your eyes; eating carrots will improve your vision; there is nothing you can do about preventing sight loss; an eye exam is only necessary if you're having problems; watching television too long or sitting too close can damage your eyes.

Leading cause of vision loss for Americans age 65 and older is AMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration).  Preventive steps is a regular eye doctor visit, learn and watch of symptoms and signs, don't smoke-eat healthy-stay active.

Another cause for loss of vision or scarring of the corneal is development of fungus due to wearing contact lenses.  Preventive maintain routine eye doctor exam, dispose contacts when instructed, maintain proper lens hygiene, remove lens when showering, swimming or any water activities.
