On April 7 2013, Matt Williams and Shawn Carnes began broadcasting Nashville Underground Radio with the intention of bringing the real Nashville to the rest of the world - especially its ecclectic music scene. One year later, the show that started on one cell phone in a living room is becoming a solidified brand name in the Nashville community.
And we couldn't do it without the artists we've featured each week. That's why, one year later, we are celebrating the music LIVE at The Sound Shelter studio with performances by: Jamie Meyer, Ella Mae Bowen, Matt Giraud, Ben Sturgell, Erika Cole, Them Vibes, Rebecca Roubion, Zeke Duhon, Kayla Nettles, and Matt Bednarsky, with special appearances by Lindsay Ell, Elle Maze, Timothy James Bowen and Kylie Rothfield!
Plus, the guys have a special announcement!
A tree fell on Matt's house. He and Shawn discuss that, plus Zeke Duhon and Kylie Rothfield at ALoft Hotel, the shows they missed out on, Emblem 3 and more! They also feature an interview and an amazing performance by Striking Matches and a hilarious interview with local improv group LOLNashville!
Striking Matches, made up of Sarah Zimmermann and Justin Davis, came to Nashville simply to play music. In December 2012, Striking Matches made their debut on the Grand Ole Opry where they have subsequently played more than twenty times. The duo has had six songs featured on ABC’s hit show Nashville. They became the first artist signed to the newly launched I.R.S. Records Nashville with their debut full length effort produced by T-Bone Burnett and Buddy Miller to be released in 2014.
LOL Nashville is a short and long-form improv comedy troupe. Every part of every show is unscripted and is made up on the spot with the help of suggestions from the audience. Every improv show they have performed has been sold out, which meant the troupe has had to secure a large performance space for the rest of the year.
It's the first show of 2014! This week, no featured artist, just Matt and Shawn recapping the past year and gearing up for the new year. They also feature the best musical moments of 2013, including the first song ever played on the show, the first song debuted on the show, the first live in-studio performance and more!
Ben Sturgell is a singer/songwriter/producer that resides in Nashville and L.A. Ben love’s to create, and write music that tells the story of his life, and others around him. This week we speak to him about his art, new music and the difference between living in LA and Nashville.
Matt and Shawn are officially on break for the holidays; however, Matt had the opportunity to catch up with yet another American Idol alum before he left! In leu of a full-length show, please enjoy his interview with Matt Giraud! Matt is a singer/songwriter from Kalamazoo, Michigan who achieved national recognition and acclaim for his performances on American Idol. As a favorite of the judges, he was the first ever recipient of the judges’ sav
On the heals of a very successful one year anniversary party, the guys begin to look forward to a busy spring. Coming up is the Nashville Film Festival, Kylie Rothfield's album release, several festivals sponsored by Nashville Underground Entertainment, and more!

It's time to wear green and celebrate! Nikki Williams is back for another guest appearance as Matt and Shawn discuss their St. Patricks Day celebrations, AMP, celebrity sightings and more! And this week's #NUartist is The Kicks! After seven years as one of Nashville's greatest rock bands, The Kicks are calling it quits. The frontman Jordan gives Nashville Underground a call to explain why and discuss their farewell show coming up next Saturday!
The largest songwriter's festival in the country, Tin Pan South was this week! Ten venues, 20 shows and over 250 artists were featured in this year's event! Matt was also at a bachelor party, which leads to a conversation about strip clubs and the guys discuss their one year anniversary party next week!
And this week's #NUartist is Them Vibes! The band, consisting of Larry Florman and Alex Haddad, began writing and recording their independent debut record, Shine On, in their backyard of Nashville, TN. They sought to make an album that was unchained from the grid-perfect, quick fix plug-in standards of today’s recording. Demanding vintage tones, feel, and performance, Them Vibes went to work creating a record that felt both new and familiar. Six months later they left with an eleven song LP that achieved just that.
Matt and Shawn had an adventurous weekend with Nikki Williams. They also talk about Nashville hot chicken, TMZ and the loads of events coming up in Nashville.
Also, this week's #NUartist is Sam Brooker! Best known for being 1/2 of the musical duo, Sam & Ruby, Sam's music can be heard on Sirius XM singer/songwriter stations and on the big screen. His songs have been featured on TV and in such films as “The Secret Life Of Bees” and more recently the movie, “Hope Springs.” He also owns Artist Revolution Publishing who’s flagship writer, Jesse Rice, co-wrote Florida Georgia Line’s record setting Billboard #1 song Cruise.
