The Biz With D: Interview w/ Ceaser & Dutchess (Black Ink Crew) + TK-N-Cash

    in Music

Ceaser is the owner of Black Ink. Since he first acquired Black Ink in 2011, Ceaser has continued to expand his business and has worked on turning Black Ink into a brand. Born and raised in the Bronx, Ceaser struggled between the pull of the streets, and his passion for artwork. When his daughter, Cheyenne, was born, Ceaser decided that he wanted a better life for his daughter. Opening Black Ink changed Ceaser’s life forever. Now, Ceaser struggles to find the balance between running Harlem's only black-owned tattoo shop, his on-again/off-again relationship with Dutchess, and the drama that lives between the walls of his shop.Though his friends call Ceaser an "asshole" (he even has it tattooed on him), underneath the tough exterior is a guy with a big heart who knows how to keep it real.

Dutchess is the only female tattoo artist at Black Ink, but that doesn’t keep her from being a force to reckon with. Dutchess is a Southern Belle from Lincolnton, North Carolina. She graduated at the top of her class and went on to receive a degree in Business Management. Whether it was her business skills or her eye for art, this sexy and powerful woman has had a hold on Ceaser’s heart from the beginning. Dutchess, who isn’t afraid to speak her mind, has had her up and downs with not only Ceaser, but with the other crew as well. However one thing's for sure…whether it comes to modeling gigs or to tattooing celebrity clientele, Dutchess makes sure that all eyes are certainly on her.

The Biz With D: Interview w/ Tank + Melanie Amaro + 12 Til

    in Music

Strength can often be found in the midst of struggle. It's in those moments of hardship that we fully understand who we are and what we're really capable of. Grammy Award-nominated R&B singer, songwriter, and producer Tank realized that in late 2012. While working on the TGT super group album, Three Kings, with Ginuwine and Tyrese, he simultaneously endured a string of revelatory personal shakeups.

"Those were some trying times from a relationship standpoint," he admits. "We were finally getting TGT together, and I was going through it personally. Everything was happening all at once, and it was a lot to face. I went through this headache and heartbreak, but I emerged in a better place. That's when music started coming to me. I was initially trying to hide everything behind this heavy and intense 808 vibe, and I leaned towards my strengths instead. I started playing piano and drums again as well as adding live instruments. In the past, I've only made music in the middle of a storm or on my way into one. This was the first time I made music under sunshine. I've been blessed to have a great story and testimony now."

Tank came out on the other side with that "story"—his sixth full-length solo album, Stronger [Atlantic Records]. In between releasing Three Kings and touring, he spent the better part of 2013 building his latest body of work. Whether he was on a plane, in hotel rooms, or at home in Los Angeles, he completely submersed himself in the creative process. Tank also found an inspiring collaborator in the iconic Jerry "Wonder" Duplessis [The Fugees, Shakira, Miguel]. While in Jerry's NYC studio one night, the pair simply clicked.

The Biz With D: Interview w/ Natalie "The Floacist" Stewart & DJ Young Music

    in Music

Born in Germany to Jamaican born and British raised parents, Natalie ‘The Floacist’ Stewart is a natural. The trained actress and slam champion poet, she made her stage debut at age three.  As a graduate of Richard Branson’s BRIT Performing Arts and Technology College where she earned the title of ‘Student of The Year.'  The Floacist later went on to invite her long time friend Marsha Ambrosius to perform at a poetry event that Natalie was headlining along side her renowned performance poetry group ‘3 Plus 1.'  That night, Floetry was born.  As the creative mastermind of Floetry, The Floacist acted as manager and PR agent.  She then managed to take her blossoming artistic venture from South London to Philadelphia and ultimately, to the World.  So, ??after five years of non-stop, sold out, touring and selling well over 1 million copies of three released albums and a live album DVD, Floetry moved on to solo ventures. ?

The Floacist's third album 'RISE of the Phoenix Mermaid was released on March 18th 2014. RISE of the Phoenix Mermaid has been inspired, as always, by my personal walk and journey through the pages of the day to day parable that is my life! RISE is a compilation of a few songs that I wrote in 2006/7, at the point of the end of Floetry, that I didn't have the opportunity to share but have now reworked and finally am delighted to present to my audience, as well as a few completely new songs that I manifested in 2013, and I have also converted some of my favorite spoken word pieces into the Floetic ethos of song structure.

The Biz With D: Interview w/ Brave Williams + Sassy + Sky (VH1's Black Ink Crew)

    in Music

At an early age, Brave embraced her musical talents, having already started her musical career when casted as a Lead Singer for the MTV Reality show, P. Diddy’s “Making The Band”. Although she was subdued from the reality show by the struggle of her father’s diagnosis of prostate cancer and early signs of dementia, her talent was still destined for success, which she earnestly grappled for. The Grammy award-winning producer, Rich Harrison, found Brave’s vocal innocence and talent captivating and signed her under Columbia Records. Having later been dropped from the record label, she was devastated by the sound of Beyoncé’s “Crazy In love,” a track that was originally created for her while recording with Harrison.

Determined to follow her soul and pursue her musical dreams, Brave moved to Los Angeles. After three years of development and hard work, Brave found herself in front of Rich Harrison once again; however, this time with the idea of an all-girl group which she named “Richgirl.” Brave, the soul creator of the group, took the lead in landing “Richgirl” a major deal with Jive Records. The group instantly created billboard hits including their first singles “24’s” and “He Ain’t Wit Me Now.”

The Biz With D: Interview w/ Case + Tracey Lee

    in Music

Born Case Woodard, R&B star Case inherited his musical gifts from his father who was once a member of 70’s funk band Cameo. The oldest sibling of 3, the New York native grew up in a strict household and although music was the bond that tied him and his father together, it would also tear them apart. Case’s solo career took off in 1996 with the release of "Touch Me, Tease Me" (with rapper Foxy Brown and R&B singer Mary J. Blige) from The Nutty Professor soundtrack, going gold and reaching #4 on the R&B charts and #63 on the Hot 100. His self-titled debut Case soon followed along with the minor R&B hit singles "More to Love" and "I Gotcha." Case followed the success of his first album with the release of Personal Conversation in 1999. The album featured the hits "Happily Ever After" (which reached #3 on the R&B charts and #15 on the Hot 100) and "Faded Pictures," (released April 20, 1999), which featured R&B singer Joe and reached #3 on the R&B charts and #10 on the Hot 100. "Happily Ever After" featured Beyoncé in the video as Case's love interest. The album's third single, "Think of You" managed to only reach #50 on the R&B charts and Personal Conversation achieved platinum status.

In 1997, the lyrics to Tracey Lee’s smash, The Theme (It’s Party Time) could be heard in every club from the east to west coast, and Tracey could be seen on national television shows such as BET Rap City: The Basement, HBO’s ARLI$$ and more. From the success of a popular single, there can be ups and downs, as Tracey found out shortly after the release of his first album, Many Facez. Now, let’s start from the beginning ...
