#126 Azim Khamisa, Author - Peace Activist

    in Education

The Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) Program is the largest school based father engagement program in the nation with over 4500 schools participating.

Azim Khamisa – an author, activist and an international inspirational speaker – was born in Kenya, Africa and had early training in mathematics, economics and finance in the U.K. A successful investment banker with over 40 years of experience, he has conducted business in Africa, Middle East, Canada, USA, Europe and Asia. Presently he serves as the President of the Child Safety Network (CSN). Committing his life to halting the continuing cycle of violence among the youth, Azim became a social activist after his 20-year-old son Tariq was senselessly  murdered while delivering pizzas in January 1995 by Tony Hicks, a 14-year-old gang member. Out of grief and despair,  Khamisa was inspired to transform his loss through the power of forgiveness. Believing that there were “victims at both ends of the gun,” Azim forgave Tony and founded the Tariq Khamisa Foundation to break the cycle of youth violence by saving lives, empowering positive choices and teaching the principles of nonviolence and peacemaking. A month after establishing the foundation, Azim invited Ples Felix, Tony’s grandfather and guardian, to join him. Together, since November 1995, the two have brought their story and message through  TKF’s Violence Impact Assemblies. The duo has reached over a million elementary and middle school children live and over 8 million via video programs, guiding the youth to choose a peacemaker’s life of non-violence and forgiveness.

Each week, WatchDOGS Radio host Keith Schumacher and co-host Chris Danenhauer discuss how this program is impacting families and schools across our nation and in four foreign countries.

The G-Spot with Meka Rae: Single Moms, Sex, and the Nightlife

    in Women

    Hi Bedroom Playmates

This week we are discussing single moms who party and may bring home a one night stand or two. Is that wrong? Why or why not? Don't single moms deserve to have fun too? If not, what is appropriate when it comes to mom's enjoying adult time and a little hanky panky? How soon should a mom bring a new lover around her kids? Is it ok for a mom to have house parties, drink, smoke, and have sex while the kids are home? Yay or nah? How often should a mom go out to party? Why is it a problem for single mom's to have a sexy swag? What do want them to do? Stay home, over dress, forget their friends, and their life? Moms can be sexy, have a great time, and still be an amazing parent, right?

This is going to be an interesting discussion! We will have Sistagirl London writer of the play: Stop Bringing Your Good Booty Call to the Breakfast Table. A play about a single mom and her booty call antics. This play premieres on Sunday, March 8th. Click this link for more information.

    Let’s talk!

Urban Therapy with Sun #116 Moms, Dads, The New Baby And Sadness

    in Lifestyle

This week on Urban Therapy with SUN we're gonna talk about Postpartum Depression in women as well as men.Postpartum depression is is the depressive state that a person may suffer from after a the birth of a child. It can be a very serious condition because it can hamper the development of a child by a parent. A parent can become overwhelmed with sadness and become neglectful of their parental duties. They can become neglectful of feeding, holding, loving, consoling, teaching, talking to, reading to, changing diapers, cleaning and nurturing a child in their depression. At it's worst a parent can even become physically or emotionally abusive to a child if they go untreated and get professional help. Some cases result in death.

Men suffer from postpartum depression as well which is something that goes unnoticed by many people. The differences between men and women with postpartum depression is that with men it's not caused by hormonal changes. There may be external factors at play that may be the cause. Fathers may not be as playful as they would normally be and may try to compensate for their depression by overindulging food or alcohol or drugs or gambling etc. They may withdraw fro familial duties in the home and my withdraw.

Postpartum depression is very serious. Please check out this show even if you don't have children. The welfare and safety of a child can depend on your knowledge.

    Dads Corp with Jorge Narvaez

    in Dads and Family

You might remember him from the Ellen Show, NBC’s Americas Got Talent, that Hyundai Commercial or I am sure you have seen his daughter and his beautiful duet of the Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros song “Home” on YouTube!

What you see is a loving father singing with his daughter Alexa, what you might not know is the struggles this man has faced throughout his life and the work he is currently doing with Dad’s Corp (a program with SAY San Diego dedicated towards empowering fathers to succeed in being partners, parents, and providers)

Jorge’s has overcome so much in his personal life, from growing up in a city that everyone thinks is pretty but never get the opportunity to see the gritty; Jorge overcame the odds from middle school to high school he says “it was all about staying alive” staying clear of gang violence and keeping yourself out of trouble wasn’t an easy road to take but Jorge did it.

During his youth Jorge and his then girlfriend became teen parents, becoming a teen parent is a super hard task and takes an extraordinary support system in order to be able to finish high school and take on the responsibility of parenthood, but the odds got stacked against Jorge even more when he mother was deported back to mexico.

Jorge is doing incredible work today in the community of San Diego with the Dads Corp Program and on Wednesday February 18th he will be doing a free fathers legal clinic helping fathers understand their rights and provide legal support resources at the Midcity Family Resource Center off El Cajon Blvd.
