Nathan Cortez, JD co-wrote an article on FDA regulation of mobile apps published in the July 24, 2014 issue of NEJM. Luckily, we snagged an opportunity to interview him - you can listen here.
We covered a wide variety of topics including:
Why regulate mHealth anyway?
The new FDA guidance — what needs to be regulated and what does not?
How does the FDA handle at continual updates of mobile health products – so different from the pharmaceuticals that they regulate? How do they decide whether an update constitutes a major change, requiring re-review and one that is minor and does not?
What is “substantially equivalence” and how is it being used in mHealth
How does the FDA handle mHealth products that provide consumer decision support (CDS)? What is the difference between low risk and high risk CDS?
Does the FDA have the right people/processes in place to provide oversight of mHealth?
Professor Cortez teaches and writes in the areas of health law, administrative law, and FDA law. His research focuses on emerging markets in health care and biotechnology. Prof. Cortez has become one of the world’s leading legal scholars on medical tourism, patient mobility, and cross-border health insurance, and has published several articles and book chapters on the legal and ethical implications of these phenomena. His research also addresses mobile health technologies, how to regulate innovations that disrupt static regulatory regimes, the First Amendment restraints on FDA regulation (including FDA's graphic tobacco warnings), immigration federalism, and alternative modes of regulation.

We have been interviewing many people high level executives in the Voice Authentication field. This is not surprising, as Voice Authentication is starting to be recognized as a very viable Biometric technology, and holds great promise for securing smartphones, tablets, netbooks, and all sorts of other wireless devices. For instance, if you are in a rush, using fingeprint recognition may take longer than expected, and many people are still squeamish about having their irises scanned. But with Voice Authentication, all you have to do is merely speak into your iPhone or Android device, and within a second or less, it will unlock for you. In this radio show, we interview Mr. Brendan Treacy, CEO of VRAI Mobile, based out of the United Kingdom. They have developed a very unique app called the 'MyVoiceKeepass", which protects your wireless device. But more than that, along with Voice Authentication, you can use the other, various "unlocking" mechanisms this app possesses, thus, creating a totall safe and secure environment. Find out more about this very unique app in this interview!

Myrbetriq®'s Advertising Partnership with RunPee App
Pharmaguy interviews Walt Johnston, Vice President of US Marketing and New Product Planning, and Emily Sitrin Mason, Consumer Marketing Director - Urology Franchise, at Astellas (see Bios). We discuss a new partnership with Astellas Pharma US and the RunPee mobile app as part of the company's marketing campaign for Myrbetriq® (mirabegron) featuring an animated bladder character.
The RunPee app is a movie-viewing app that tells you the best time to "run and pee" without missing the best scenes. While the ultimate goal is to encourage individuals to speak with a health care professional about overactive bladder (OAB), Astellas is encouraging those who experience symptoms of OAB to enjoy the movies this summer and download the app to determine the best time to use the restroom during movies if needed.

Earlier today a new form of malware was disclosed that is targeting iOS devices. Our team found this particularly interesting as this highly sophisticated malware reportely can impact devices that are not jailbroken, it leverages rogue variants of popular applications and the malware uses code obfuscation to protect itself while taking advantage of mobile applications that are not obfuscated.
We have quickly assembled a team of experts to talk about what we know about this new form of malware and the potential enterprise mobile security implications.
As a precursor to Lacoon Mobile Security's upcoming presentation at Blackhat 2014, we interivew Daniel Brodie, a Sr. Security Researcher at Lacoon to discuss some of the vulnerabilities that exist in Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) frameworks, as well as provide some insights into the implications of using VDI in your enterprise.
Daniel explains how while VDI solutions are certainly a beneficial tool to protect enterprises against device theft, they don’t provide protection against targeted threats such as mobile Remote Access Trojans (mRATs) and Man-in-the-Middle. In fact, as he shows in the research, threats against the underlying VDI platform are fairly easy to carry out by using widely-distributed free tools.
The podcast goes over the main topics that he’ll present at Blackhat, including the methods of research, potential threats and best practices that enterprises should follow.
Host Stacie Walker and guest Alex Genadinik talk about his mobile app customized for business planning and ideas, fundraising, and marketing. Alex is the founder of Problemio, a mobile app company that helps new and existing entrepreneurs create stronger companies for long term success.
