Rum and Coca-Cola: the Andrew Sisters, With Vic Schoen and his Orchestra
Rum and Coca-Cola” is the title of a popular calypso. Originally composed by Lord Invader and Lionel Belasco, it was copyrighted in the United States by entertainer Morey Amsterdam (Dick Van Dyke show) and became a huge hit in 1945 for the Andrews Sisters, spending ten weeks at the top of Billboard's U.S. Pop Singles chart.
Lord Invader also wrote a follow-up song to "Rum and Coca-Cola", titled "Yankee Dollar".

Trying to preserve the largely ignored original analog sound of the old 78 records, plus learn some music history along the way
this show is part of a music experiment
Born Obediah Don bell Jessie, 28 December 1936, Lincoln Manor, Texas, Young Jessie embodies the primal blend of R & B and rock 'n' roll. Though he never scored a national hit, he has succeeded in making a living out of music for the past 55 years and is still active today. Obie, as he likes to be called, was born in a suburb of Dallas. His father, James Jessie, was a cook and had no musical accomplishments, while his mother, Melinda Harris (nicknamed Plunky) was a housewife who confined her piano playing to home and church. She taught Obie how to play ukelele and piano. In 1946, the Jessie family relocated to Los Angeles, where Melinda exposed Obie to jazz concerts by the greats of the day (Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton a.o.). After Obie's grandmother became ill in 1950, he and his mother returned to Dallas, where he began his study of music (piano and sax) and joined the high school band. He completed his education at Jefferson High in Los Angeles where he met Johnny Watson and Richard Berry. With the latter and three others, Jessie formed a vocal group, as yet unnamed, who auditioned for John Dolphin. They recorded their first single ("I Had A Love", written by Jessie) in 1953 for Dolphin's Recorded In Hollywood label. Dolphin credited them as The Hollywood Blue Jays, a name he had previously used for another gospel-oriented group. "We were pretty dissatisfied and thought We gotta get ourselves a real record company", says Obie. That company was Modern/RPM Records, run by the Bihari brothers. Their first record for the label was a remake of "I Had A Love". The Biharis dubbed the group The Flairs and put them on their new subsidiary label Flair.
Shabba Doo is the stage name of Adolfo Quiñones (born May 11, 1955), an American actor, dancer, choreographer, and director. Quiñones grew up in Chicago. He is of multi-ethnic background; his father was Puerto Rican, and his mother, who raised him alone from the age of three, was African American.
As a member of The Original Lockers along with Don "Campbellock" Campbell, Fred "Rerun" Berry and Toni Basil, Quiñones became one of the founders of the dance style commonly known as locking.
His most well-known role was as Ozonein the 1984 hit cult film, Breakin', as well as in its sequel, Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo. Quiñones also appeared in the film Rave - Dancing to a Different Beat, which he also directed.
In addition, he has made guest appearances on TV shows, including The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!,Married... with Children, Miami Vice,What's Happening!!, Saturday Night Live and Lawrence Leung's Choose Your Own Adventure.
Besides acting and dancing work in film and television, Quiñones has served as a choreographer to many singers, such as Lionel Richie, Madonna, and Luther Vandross. He was a primary dancer and main choreographer for Madonna's Who's That Girl? Tour in 1987. He served as choreographer for Jamie Kennedy's MTV sitcom, Blowin' Up. He also choreographed Three Six Mafia's performance on the 78th Academy Awards, when they won the Oscar for best original song for their song "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp".
Quiñones (along with his Breakin' co-star Michael "Boogaloo Shrimp" Chambers and other dancers from the film) is prominently featured in the music video for Chaka Khan's 1984 song "I Feel for You". Adolfo was in Rome in March 2012 for 1 workshop of dance, hip hop old school.
The day the church died is when we forsook God as a nation, the bible says " My people have committed two evils, they have forsaken me the fountaing of living waters and hewned out cistrens that can hold no water.
Pastor Les ties the 1970's hit song American Pie that has the famous line, The day the music died" referring to Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens famous rock n roll stars of their day, that were killed in tragic plane accident. The church of America is tragically dying as we know it . It's time to get back to God and turn from our wicked ways.
Really good memories have been made in Baltimore - and you're about to HEAR one of them on 10/23/2014 :) Lionel Lyles has been firmly entrenched in the Charm City music scene for YEARS - even when he was attending North Carolina Central University.
He formed his Quintet back in Morgan State University days - in 2000. The worked that he turned out with his band has been noted in our region and beyond. When "The Nightlife: The September Sessions" arrived on the scene, we were all convinced in town that Lionel was on his way. But, he was intent on education. He wanted no false steps in a journey that he considers both a musical one - and a spiritual one.
His NEW CD "At the Precipice", will re-awaken those Jazz juices in you. Lionel has a way of conveying "the masters" that he reveres in a refreshing way. He's young and hip to the current music scene, but his preference - fortunately for us - is Jazz. Oh, YES, that's what you'll hear on the next "Hybrid Jazz!"
Matter-of-fact, you'll get a sneak preview of Lionel's new work - he's sharing it with us! And what we have in the mix to coincide with our friends's visit: artists from both Baltimore AND Florida. Where the memories have been wonderful - and where the memories WILL BE so! You'll find something that you like - that's a promise.
Join us in The Chat Room at one p.m. Eastern time on 10/23. Lionel drops by in the third hour of the show. It's an exciting time for a good friend - let's celebrate!
