In The Streets with Beverley Smith: Died In Custody (Episode 54)

    in Politics

Gynnya McMillen was 16. It was her first arrest, a family dispute. The authorities used martial arts on her in the detention center. She's dead. Another trans woman is dead, Monica Loera, of Austin, TX. She's the first to be murdered in 2016.

The Flint water poisoning atrocity unfolds as we learn that state workers in Flint were provided bottled water, even though they publicly assured residents of the water's safety, while privately mocking and deriding them in emails. Demands and petitions for the governor's resignation flood the Internet. The FBI has begun a criminal investigation into the Case of the Toxic Water.

5 percent of polluters create 90 percent of toxic emissions. Take a wild guess where those Super Polluter facilities are located. The Navajo water supply is also quite toxic, perhaps worse than Flint's, and the Navajos are wondering why they can't seem to generate any media attention.

Oklahoma GOP bill would ban suicidal LGBTQI teens from seeking help from queer-friendly therapists. The legislation is the latest in OK Rep. Sally Kern's crusade against gay people. Former Oklahoma officer Daniel Holtzclaw, who was convicted of raping 13 black women and sentenced to 263 years, has disappeared from the Oklahoma Dept of Corrections online database that is open to the public. The authorities refuse to comment, which may defy state law that says that the victims are entitled to know of their offender's whereabouts.

Five Florida cops face prison for a vicious beating of an unarmed man who had already surrendered. Four officers plead guilty to violating Derrick Price's rights. Last Tuesday, Jan. 26, the fifth officer Jesse Terrell was indicted with charges stemming from the beating which was caught on video. On Jan 27, the video was released to the public. Tues. Feb 2, 6pm Pacific

Montego Bay Pride Set for October 25, 2015

    in Current Events

Nicholas Snow welcomes LGBTQI Activist Maurice Tomlinson, who hails from Montego Bay, to preview the October 25th, 2015 Montego Bay Pride, and to dicuss the cultural and political context in which the event is taking place.  Visit the Montego Bay Pride Facebook Page.

The recent historic Jamaica Pride that took place in Kingston was an unqualified success. With public endorsements from the mayor of Kingston and the Minister of Justice, it is clear that the forward march for the full liberation of Jamaican LGBTI people is unstoppable.  However, some persons from Montego Bay and western Jamaica were not able to participate in Pride Jamaica because of financial and other constraints. Many members of Jamaica’s LGBTI community are still only able to get entry-level positions because of SOGI stigma and discrimination. Therefore, they had limited time off and resources to travel to and stay in Kingston.  A team of dedicated and motivated local Jamaicans are therefore organizing the first-ever Montego Bay Pride on Oct. 25! The team is led by internationally recognized LGBTI activist, Maurice Tomlinson, who also hails for Montego Bay.

The Human Agenda; Conversations about Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity

    in Spirituality

THE HUMAN AGENDA: Conversations about Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity with author Joe Wenke

Despite the progress in the movement toward marriage equality, the LGBTQI community continues to face difficult, and often heartbreaking, odds. Gay and lesbian youth are four times more likely than their peers to attempt suicide. Nearly half of transgender teens have contemplated suicide and a quarter has made an attempt, according to The Trevor Project. Adoption equality and second-parent rights are still blocked in many states, and legislators in Oklahoma and Alabama have tried to introduce laws that make it legal to discriminate against gays and lesbians. Perhaps most disturbing of all, homicide rates for transgender women account for 45 percent of all hate murders, according to GLAAD.

Joe Wenke thinks there is a better way. By opening up discussions about our shared humanity and experiences, Wenke is getting people to talk with, not at, each other and leaving the rancor and divisiveness behind, beginning with his book THE HUMAN AGENDA: Conversations about Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity. For this collection of frank conversations about growing up, coming out, finding your identity, family, marriage, parenting, careers and so much more.

SimplyNay's Stimulus Plan: LGBTQI Brand Loyalty

    in Business

'Tis the season to spend some moolah!
La!La!La!La!La!La!La!La! But in the heart of a recession perhaps we should be mindful who benefits from all of our budgeting! Without a Trans-Inclusive Employement Non-Discrimination Act, LGBTQI individuals are forced to become entrepreneurs to avoid eviction. Thus with a total buying power beyond $641 billion shouldn't the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex Community be capable of bailing ourselves out with LGBTQI Brand Loyalty? We are joined by EnGAYgedWeddings.com for this mental orgasm!
