    Ultimate Play Day

    in Moms and Family

The Ultimate Play Day is a day long celebration focused on the idea that play is a crucial aspect of everyone’s life. Hosted by the Playful Pittsburgh Collaborative, the Ultimate Play Day is an opportunity for the Pittsburgh community to come together in a centralized location to engage in and learn about play. This year, local and regional organizations will host play stations throughout Burgwin Park to provide a holistic model of innovative and creative play. The event will feature outdoor play, an opportunity to create with natural materials such as small logs, rocks, & acorns, games made from recycled material, art, the imagination playground, story telling sessions, hula hoop play, and drum circles. There will be play for every age—from the very young to the most seasoned!

This celebration will also introduce community members to playful organizations such as The Carnegie Museum of Art, The Saturday Light Brigade, Kids Plus Pediatrics, PAEYC, Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, and many more! Our hope is that this event will spark conversations regarding other play-based topics including, play and learning, risk and play, nature play, and play through design.

Join me as I speak with Cara Ciminillo to chat about this exciting event!

Your Body, Sex and Life After Having a Baby

    in Moms and Family

Everyone prepares you for pregnancy. Everywhere you turn, there are countless books, online resources and mothers all too eager to share with you the latest and best tips for everything from morning sickness remedies to planning a baby shower and everything in between.

But what I quickly discovered, as I’m sure most of you have, is that practically no one prepares you for the days, weeks and months after your bundle of joy has arrived. Our bodies, hormones and emotions go through so much, all while learning to care for our newborn. It’s essential that we take time to address our own needs and concerns during this time.

Join me on this special episode of Mom Talk with Denise LaRosa, as I speak with Rebecca Meehan, PT, WCS, of Embody Physiotherapy and Wellness, about a wide range of post-natal issues from all those aches and pains, to that annoying belly pooch that just won’t go away, to how to ease into sex after having a baby.

The Joys and Challenges of Foster and Adoptive Parenting

    in Moms and Family

Join me on this special episode of Mom Talk with Denise LaRosa, as I have a mom talk with mom blogger and foster parenting advocate, Kelly Hughes.

Kelly is a happily married wife and mother of 2 biological children.  Kelly and her husband are certified foster parents and have fostered 7 kids in 3 separate siblings groups. They are now in the process of adopting 2 of their foster children.

If all of that weren’t enough to keep her busy, Kelly is also the founder of The Pgh Momtourage, a community of Pittsburgh moms who love to connect with other moms (& dads), sharing in the experiences - and the craziness - of parenthood and enjoying our city together. As a foster parent, Kelly Hughes has watched 7 little ones show up at her door step with little or nothing. With often short notice of their arrival, it can become a scramble for foster parents to have basic clothing and necessities for the children. So she created the Foster Love Project to encourage donations of placement bags.

If you are a foster or adoptive parent, or have a desire to become a foster or adoptive parent, then I highly encourage you to open your heart and mind, and listen to Kelly share her joys, challenges and experiences with both.

Use Your Words: Your Baby is Listening and Learning

    in Moms and Family

We all think we talk a lot to our babies and children, every day. But we also know there are things that compete with that time: TV, texting, email, web surfing. At the end of the day, we can suddenly find that the hours have slipped away and we haven’t quite done as much as we’d like to interact with our babies and children.

To help parents foster language development in their children, Pennsylvania’s Allegheny County Department of Human Services (ADHS) has launched an interesting and informative campaign reminding adults to talk to the little ones in their care – early, often and face-to-face. The campaign is called “Use Your Words: Your Baby is Listening and Learning.”

Join Denise as she speaks with ADHS's Leslie Reicher about practical ways you can use your words to enrich the language development of your child. You do NOT want to miss out on these simple, yet effective tips!

    MMA DieHArds Radio: Tara LaRosa

    in Sports

On this episode of MMA DieHards Radio, hosts Jason Kelly (Twitter: @JayMMADieHards) and Joe Rizzo (Twitter: @rearnakedchoke) welcome back Tara LaRosa.

LaRosa (Twitter: @TaraLaRosa) recently competed against Rin Nakai at "Pancrase 252: 20th Anniversary" in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.  LaRosa and Nakai went to a decision, which resulted in controversy.  LaRosa appeared to have done enough to earn the judges' decision, but, in Japan, it's tough for an America to seal the victory and that led to Nakai picking up the win.  Though, LaRosa was disappointed she left The Land of the Rising Sun without a win, she did enjoy many of the things Japan had to offer.

LaRosa also talked TUF 18, shared funny stories in Japan and revealed what she'll sell for $1,000.  Listen up! This is a classic you do not want to miss!

A+ Schools Offers Tips on Parental Engagement

    in Moms and Family

As a parent, you are your child’s greatest educational resource. Essentially, you are your child’s first teacher. As a former elementary school educator, I can tell you that NOTHING is more detrimental to your child’s learning than tension between you and your child’s teacher. The home-school connection must be strong with all parties working towards the same goal – the educational success of the child.

A+ Schools is the community advocate and leader for educational equity and excellence in Pittsburgh’s Public Schools. Its core purpose and focus is to remove any barriers to equity in our schools. A+ Schools is dedicated to educating the public, increasing awareness and engaging the community in efforts to advance change.

Join me as I speak with A+ Schools community organizer, Amie Matson, about the home-school connection and how parents and teachers can work together to ensure academic success for their children.
