    4-8-15- Dr. Hildy®: Beware The Designer Mosquito and Her Friends

    Wednesday, April 8, 2015, 1:00-3:00PM Pacific
    (2:00-4:00pm Mountain; 3:00-5:00pm Central; 4:00-6:00pm Eastern)
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    With summer approaching, it’s not uncommon to often find things buzzing around your head. Most of the time, it’s harmless flies or mosquitos, trying to feed. But recently, there have been more things flying around. With the rise of remote controlled flying drones, there are more cameras than ever looking at us always. But while these are easily identifiable, flying insects are often not. Not only due to size, but also due to mutations and other factors that render them from their common forms to new species never seen before.
    With drones becoming increasingly prevalent, people are taking measures to protect themselves from their prying eyes. While the FAA has not taken steps to regulate these machines, nine states have taken measures to enact laws to regulate their use and illegal surveillance.
    But what happens when the cameras become too small to see? Currently, there are cameras smaller than a penny that can take high-resolution photos. The military and other contractors are currently designing surveillance drones that resemble insects, not just in appearance, but also in size.
    Designer diagnosis. How do know what your clients really want?
    in Design
    Top designers are talking about their strategies for ‘designer diagnosis,’ sleuthing out what people really want in their interior design.
    Designers tread a careful path when trying to find out your true interior design dreams. What we say we like, isn't necessarily what we really want in our homes. It's the designer’s challenge to decipher, extrapolate, and really compare your taste, style, and day-to-day lifestyle. Being able to translate what you say, who you are, and what you do into a design that comforts, inspires, and delights you is what separates the very best designers from the rest.
    We are talking to three extraordinary designers on today’s show about their ‘designer diagnosis’ style. The ‘Latina Martha Stewart’’ Vanessa DeLeon and the ‘Two Lovely Gays’ pair Russell Whitehead and Jordan Cluroe.
    Vanessa DeLeon may be best recognized from NBC’s ‘American Dream Builders.’ She also has shared her design expertise on Food Networks, Restaurant Impossible, HGTV’s Generation Renovation, Designer Challenge & more. Vanessa has a signature 'Glamilistic' style that's developed into luxurious and succulent design experiences. But it all started with designing a Barbie house. And, yes, we’ll be talking about the ‘50 Shades of Grey’ bedroom she designed, too.
    The ‘Two Lovely Gays’ Russell and Jordan became sensations in Britain after participating in the The Great Interior Design Challenge on BBC Two. With an exuberance and cutting-edge style the team are making over spaces that dazzle our senses. But the real star of their clan may be their dog Buckley.
    Metalsmith Benchtalk with Michael Gayk, Educator, Digital Designer and Maker
    in Art
    Our guest on Metalsmith Benchtalk on Thursday, April 16th, 2015 at 3:00 PST/ 6:00 EST is Michael Gayk, educator, digital designer and maker of things.
    Please join us for this LIVE interview and participate by logging onto the chatroom at Blogtalkradio.com or by sending a message to Whaley Studios via Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.
    About Michael:
    Michael Gayk earned an MFA in Jewelry and Metals from the University of Washington and an BFA in Metals Design from the College for Creative Studies.
    Plural Studios is a design collaboration between Courtney Starrett and Michael Gayk. Plural is interested in creating well-designed objects for the home or body, utilizing innovative digital technologies to create limited editions of our objects. We are inspired by architecture on a micro-level; observing transitions, connections, and details, as the sum of all parts, both man-made and natural.  At Plural we strive for accessibility along with high design objects both for the home and the body.
    “My current work investigates the relationship between body adornment and the digitized human body. Historically jewelry has always reflected the technologies of its time. A necklace fashioned from seashells dating 80 BCE years old was found at Taforalt in eastern Morocco. This discovery illustrates the sense of symbolic material value of that time and suggests a developed capacity for cultural modernity. The example of the seashell necklace comes from a genus of marine snail called Nassarius, which no longer inhabits the shores of Morocco today. With the use of advanced manufacturing methods such at bio-printing and DNA duplication it may be possible to cultivate the lost Nassarius, or any biological structure.”
    Ricky Brava speaks with Award-winning Norwegian designer/artist Lise Ellingsen
    in Entrepreneur
    Listen in on Ricky Brava and Lise Ellingsen's conversation!
    Lise is a fun and talented Designer! learn more about her and her trends on The Ricky Brava Show.
    How did it begin? a blonde walks into a bar and orders. well, actually she started drawing on napkins. and what she came up with was this:
    Blondes Make Better T-shirts is a line where the design of each tee is unique, fun and conceptual — playing off “blonde-ness” (each destined to become collector’s items). But they’re smart — using only 100% sustainable, sweatshop-free and ethically responsible fabrics. One fabric, Promodal, is comprised of 40% beech tree and 60% eucalyptus tree. Another fabric is made of 50% recycled plastic bottles mixed with organic cotton.
    Blonde #1 is Lise Ellingsen. She was considering the title “Head Blonde” but found it redundant. Oslo born Ms. Ellingsen took her BFA degree at School of Visual Art in New York. Over the past eight years, she has worked with the top advertising and graphic design firms in New York, Amsterdam and Oslo. Her work for brands like Smirnoff, Coca Cola, Jones Apparel, Jimmy Kimmel and Intel have won over 8 awards, including the prestigious Art Director Club Award and Type Director Club Award. She’s equally adept in print, interactive and TV. For the last few years she studied film at the New School University in New York and her short film has been shown in several festivals and cinemas in Europe and the US. Satisfying as that is, she feels T-shirts are the next horizon.
