"Up Close & Personal" with Bassist "John Dillard"

    in Music

Profusely talented and highly gifted.Born and raised in Rochester, NY, John was surrounded by music that helped shape his particular style of playing. John credits his early influences to his father. John’s musical journey started when he was eight years old. John gives credit to other heavy influences aside from family members such as Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller, Dave Holland, Ron Carter, John Patitucci, Nathan East, Fred Hammond, and Joel Smith. When asked about his greatest influences, John’s response is always: “Too many to name and enough to keep me humble and always practicing.”
Whether John is playing electric, acoustic (upright) bass, or key bass, John can be found holding the groove on local stages in Charlotte, NC, his hometown, or performing on main stages across the country with national recording artists. In his career thus far, he has worked with gospel artist Lejuene Thompson, musical director for Grammy Award-winning singer and actress Stephanie Mills, contemporary jazz artists Brian Simpson, Matt Marshak, Jeff Kashiwa, Steve Cole, Walter Beasley, Nick Colionne, Marc Antoine, and Four80East. Additionally, John has earned Grammy certifications for his performances on EMI gospel projects “Oh Happy Day,” an All-Star Celebration (Best Traditional Gospel Album) and Heather Headley’s “Audience of One” (Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album.) in Christianity

Jaron’s unique voice has influenced his artistry as well as his teaching. As a budding pedagogue specializing in contemporary music styles, his research on The Comparison of Vibrato Between Classical Tenors and Gospel Tenors has been presented in various seminars and classes, including the 2014 Voice Forum at The Ohio State University.

His quest for further knowledge of the pedagogy of modern singing styles is a result of his upbringing. As a child, he sang soprano in his church’s children’s choir. Even while training in these other styles, Jaron never stopped singing Gospel.

Currently, he is the only male alto in Ricky Dillard & New Generation Chorale, a Grammy nominated gospel choir based out of Chicago. He has also sung on operatic stages and performed main stage roles like “Mingo" in Porgy & Bess. In addition to his operatic experiences, he has performed in many recitals, concerts, and oratorios including Magnificat in D major by J. S. Bach and Mozart’s Requiem. Jaron has also been a finalist in several national competitions including the Orpheus Vocal Competition and Kentucky Bach Choir’s Audrey Rooney Vocal Competition.

Unknown to most is Jaron's history of speech and communication difficulties as a child that influenced his development of the speaking voice and care for the professional voice user. His speech was mostly incomprehensible which made it nearly impossible for him to communicate with anyone besides immediate family.

In addition to his private studio, Jaron serves on the Voice Faculty as an Adjunct Professor of Voice at Point Park University and currently holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from The University of Akron and a Master of Arts in Voice Pedagogy from The Ohio State University.
