Dick B. on "The First International A.A. History Conference"
This is Dick B. speaking to you from Maui Hawaii. And this evening's show will tell you the latest highlights of "The First International Alcoholics Anonymous History Conference" being held September 6-7, 2013, in Portland, Maine, at The First Baptist Church of Portland Maine, located at 360 Canco Rd in Portland.
We have a special Web page for the conference. It can be seen at http://mcaf.ee/ghcky. My son Ken B. and I will be in Portland, Maine, staying at the Hilton Garden Inn Portland Airport at 145 Jetport Blvd. in Portland from Thurs., Sept. 5, to Thurs., Sept. 12. The main events of the conference will be held Fri.-Sat., September 6-7. Ken and I will also meet with individuals or groups between Sept. 6 and Sept. 12 to discuss the many topics I'll mention in this show. We have found that special meetings in our hotel lobby, hotel room, restaurants, and other convenient places can often be the heart of and the most productive part of these conferences. They allow for personalized questions, comments, suggestions, discussions, and planning on our three major focuses as historians and authors of Alcoholics Anonymous History and A.A.'s Roots in the Bible. Please contact me at DickB@DickB.com and arrange in advance for convenient times and places for such Portland meetings.
Main historical focuses will be on: (1) The 12 Steps of A.A. (2) A.A. Origins, History, Founders, and Facts. (3) Sponsorship Today. (4) Orienting and informing newcomers. (5) A.A. History Past, Present, and Future.
And now for more conference details which we hope will encourage you to attend, participate, speak, and even bring exhibits. Following are many possible subjects where you may have experience and expertise that will help recovering newcomers today.

Black Abolitionists Book- John Brown Raid & Civil War
Mary, Free, Educated & A Spy! Disguise... Confederate White House Slave Mary was the best as she was working right in The Confederate President's home. She had a photographic mind. Everything Mary saw on the Rebel President’s desk she could repeat word for word. “Ellen Bond” was neither dim-witted, illiterate, nor a slave. In reality she was a free, well educated African American woman by the name of Mary Elizabeth Bowser. And she was a Union spy working right under Confederate President Jefferson Davis’s nose.
For months during the most crucial period of the Civil War, as General Ulysses S. Grant maneuvered to capture Richmond, the Confederate capital, Mary supplied critical military intelligence to the Union army. In recognition of her contributions to the Union war effort, she was inducted into the U.S. Army Military Intelligence Hall of Fame in 1995.
Elizabeth was able to arrange for a friend to take Mary with her as a servant to help at social functions held by Varina Davis in the Confederate White House. Mary performed her servant role so well she was eventually taken on full time as, presumably, a slave hired out by her master.
