Corruption is the abuse of power by a public official for private gain or any organized, interdependent system in which part of the system is either not performing duties it was originally intended to, or performing them in an improper way, to the detriment of the system's original purpose. The abuse of public offices for private gain is paradigmatic of corruption.
A common belief is that corruption is a judge taking bribes. The definition exceeds this theory. Corruption describes any organized, interdependent system in which part of the system is either not performing duties it was originally intended to, or performing them in an improper way, to the detriment of the system's original purpose.
Corrupt judicial systems not only violate the basic right to equality before the law but deny procedural rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution.
While corruption may facilitate criminal enterprise such as drug trafficking, money laundering, and mail fraud.; it is not restricted to these activities. In this country, corruption is so common that it is expected when ordinary businesses or citizens interact with government officials. The end-point of political corruption is akleptocracy, literally "rule by thieves".

What are the consequences when public servants, employed by the taxpayers, violate the public's trust? The city of Chicago erupted in protest over the Thanksgiving weekend after the release of the dashcam video graphically showing the killing of 17 year old Laquan McDonald by police officer Jason Van Dyke in 2014. For an entire year, this video has been withheld, and with its court ordered release came a series of questions as to who was involved in the coverup. Young Laquan, a ward of the State, should have received more care, support, and intervention, it seems, rather than to be shot to death for carrying a knife with which he allegedly was puncturing car tires. Illinois State Representative Mary Flowers joins us today to discuss the many levels of official misconduct that need to be addressed by elected officials as well as the voting public, in holding those accountable who violate the public trust. Can new laws and new regulations protect citizens from police abuse? Should the entire police force be scrapped and all forced to re-apply? Should mandatory psychological exams be instituted before an officer is hired? How do we weed out those who have already racked up complaints for excessive force, before they kill someone else
For now, there’s not much we can do about police brutality against our children of color. We post our social media memes, share news stories, watch footage and talk about how horrible the images are among ourselves. Some of us even put boots to the ground and march to the offices of our policymakers to advocate for change.
But in the meantime, it’s safe to say that nothing’s going to change immediately. The only two real-time things we can do are talk to our black youth and be an eyewitness — even to their own experience, according to a counselor and a former police officer turned anti-police brutality advocate.
Concerned with how my 10- and 12-year-olds are taking in all the misconduct and brutality cases, and senseless killings of black men, I wonder how they would react if put into a similar situation. Really, what should they do if/when they actually come in contact with a police officer; whether they’ve done something wrong, are witnessing a crime or want to help defend a friend or family member?
