Sermon reading: "The Science of Healing" by John G. Lake

    in Religion

    Chicago, 1920

"In Him was life; and the life was the light of men", (John 1:4).

There is a difference between Christianity and philosophy.  (I presume some folks are inquiring why it is that there is always that keynote in my addresses.)

God gave me the privilege of living in the heart of philosophic South Africa where we have one million five hundred thousand who are ministered to by Buddhist, Confucianist and Brahman riests.  Every imaginable cult has its representatives there.  I was amazed to discover that the whites were gradually assimilating the philosophy of the east, just as we Westerners are assimilating the philosophy of the East and have been doing so for a long time.  (Aren't we seeing the same thing today?  AW)

The difference between philosophy and religion, particularly the religion of Jesus Christ, is in the words I quoted from the Scripture:  "In him was life; and the life was the light of men."

    Philosophy is light.

But it is not a LIFE GIVER......

These are Dr. Lake's opening statements.  In today's broadcast, we will continue with the reading of this LIFE REVEALING MESSAGE.

"The Science of Healing" sermon by John G. Lake Pt. 2

    in Religion

In this section, Dr. Lake goes into the scientific process of digestion in the human body.  Then he draws parallels between that and the way the spirit, soul and body 'absorb' the power of God.  It has made me curious to look up the natural digestion process and see what man has learned about it since the time of Lake.

"In the process of digestion, it is something like this.  The food we eat is reduced to vegetable lymph before it is absorbed by the body.  But no scientist in the world has ever been able to satisfactorily explain what it is that changes the lymph and makes it LIFE.  Something happens when it is in the body that changes it to life.

I want to tell you what grew up in my soul, and how I proved the fact.  I could feel sometimes in the attitude of prayer just as you have felt hundreds of times, the impulse of the Spirit moving down through your brain and your person to the ends of your fingers...just little impulses of God presence in your life.  And I have said, If there was an instrument powerful enough, I believe men could see the action of the brain cells and see what took place.

Here is the secret of digestion."

Today, Part 2 of this wonderful sermon revealing the 'spiritual mechanics' behind the operations of God's Spirit.

Reading: "The Offense of the Cross" sermon given by John G. Lake

    in Religion

"And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution?  then is the offense of the cross ceased."  (Galatians 5:11)

The early ministers and preachers were declaring that the Cross was the very CENTER of religion, the SECRET of government, and the INSPIRATION of culture.  You and I are called to represent that Cross in word and life, and if we fail to do it, we are failing in loyalty to our Lord and Master.

Men are afraid of God because of wrong concepts. Let a man meet God in Jesus and he will love God.

Old things are passed away.  That is the power of the cross.  All things are become new.  That is the power of being raised in newness of life in Him, (Romans 6:4).

Sermon reading: "The Platform of Jesus" by John G. Lake Pt. conclusion

    in Religion

Dr. Lake's semon is taken from Luke 4:18 where he lists the 'platform of Jesus', i.e. think of a political party and their 'platform' stating their beliefs and goals.

This verse states Jesus' belief about his goals.  His 'political party's agenda' if you would.

    1.  Preach the Gospel to the poor.

    2. Heal the brokenhearted.

    3. Preach deliverance to the captives.

4.Recovering of sight to the blind.

    5.  Set at liberty them that are bruised.

    6.  Preach the acceptable year of the Lord, or the 'year of the Lord's acceptnce'.

People become members of a political party because they believe the platform of that party.  As Christians - Christ's ones, we can adopt these six planks as our goals also.  These goals are a good guideline and protection from error.

    Keep it simple, saints.

Practice these six planks that make up Jesus' platform and you can't get into error and will bear much fruit for the Kingdom.

Sermon reading: "The Platform of Jesus" by John G. Lake Pt. 1

    in Religion

This particular message Dr. Lake gives some of his background in the beginning days of meeting Jesus as Healer and being trained through the ministry of John Alexander Dowie.  This message is full of wonderful teaching and historical events in his life.

Luke 4:18 is the foundational verse and what Dr. Lake calls, "The Platform of Jesus".

I have listened/read this message many times.  It helps me to keep my focus on the real purpose of Christian ministry regardless of what particular function one has in the Body of Christ.

The picture above is Dr. Dowie at the front of his tabernacle in Zion, Illinois that displayed the items discarded by people that were healed.  It was under Dowie that the curse of sickness was stopped in the Lake family.

Reading: "Remarkable Manifestations of the Spirit" Sermon by John G. Lake Pt 2

    in Religion

Dr. Lake is sharing the 'remarkable manifestations of the Spirit' that occurred during his service in Pretoria, South Africa.  A woman whose shoulders had been unmoveable due to rheumatism was healed in answer to prayer.  A prominent man of the community by the name of 'Jabber' entered the service, came under the power of the Spirit and fell out, his family gathering around him and experiencing the same.

Today we read on about the Spirit's operations in the Jabber family.

Reading: "Triune Salvation Pt. 1" by John G. Lake

    in Religion

Today I am going to begin a series of readings of the sermons of Dr. John G. Lake.  This first one:  "Triune Salvation" is taken from 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24:  I pray God your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless (without defilement, corruption) unto the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Faithful is he who calls you who also will do it.

God's original intention for man is stated in this verse.  Due to the fall, defilement and corruption attacked mankind.  Jesus Christ was sent into the world to deal with the reasons and affects of the fall in order to restore mankind to God's original intent.

This sermon is packed with divine insight into the nature of sin, the nature of God and the nature of Salvation.

I would encourage you to take notes of the 'pregnant phrases'  for further meditation.

  • Reading: "Triune Salvation Pt. 2" by John G. Lake

    in Religion

Today, we are completing the reading of this sermon.

"Christ is a Savior of the whole man:  of spirit, of the soul, of the body.  When Jesus, at the Jordan, committed Himself unto all righteousness to His Father, He committd His body just as He committed His mind and just as He committed His spirit.

Christians have not been taught to commit their bodies to God and therefore they feel justified in committing them to someone else or something else, rather than to God."

Strong words from a strong man.
