The Sibling Project: Episode 4 - Theresa Valentin

    in Family

According to SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, nearly 24.6 million Americans were illicit drug users in 2013.  Now just for a moment, take that number and try to imagine the number of people that were impacted by that illicit drug use. Think about the families. Think about the number of mothers, fathers, cousins, grandfathers, co-workers and best friends. Think about all the people that were pulled into and torn apart by the viscous cycle of addiction.

Clearly, the numbers are staggering and the heartache is real and we need to start talking about it. That’s why I’ve created The Sibling Project: Exploring How The Lives of Siblings Are Impacted By Addiction. Over the next several weeks, I will be speaking one on one with a group who’s voice we rarely if ever get to hear, the siblings of addicts and alcoholics.

It is my hope, with this series of podcasts, that we can spark a new conversation that focuses on the countless number of siblings living and struggling alongside an addicted loved one.

In this fourth episode of The Sibling Project, I'm sitting down with Theresa Valentin. Theresa grew up with two older brothers both of which struggled with addiction. One loved heroin and the other would settle for just about anything he could get his hands on. At 19, Theresa left home to get away from the chaos, a decision she says she's never regretted.

    CHASING THE SCREAM-Johann Hari

    in Entertainment

It is now one hundred years since drugs were first banned in the United States. On the eve of this centenary, journalist Johann Hari set off on an epic three-year, thirty-thousand-mile journey into the war on drugs. What he found is that more and more people all over the world have begun to recognize three startling truths: Drugs are not what we think they are. Addiction is not what we think it is. And the drug war has very different motives to the ones we have seen on our TV screens for so long.

In Chasing the Scream, Hari reveals his discoveries entirely through the stories of people across the world whose lives have been transformed by this war. They range from a transsexual crack dealer in Brooklyn searching for her mother, to a teenage hit-man in Mexico searching for a way out. It begins with Hari’s discovery that at the birth of the drug war, Billie Holiday was stalked and killed by the man who launched this crusade—and it ends with the story of a brave doctor who has led his country to decriminalize every drug, from cannabis to crack, with remarkable results.

Chasing the Scream lays bare what we really have been chasing in our century of drug war—in our hunger for drugs, and in our attempt to destroy them. This book will challenge and change how you think about one of the most controversial—and consequential—questions of our time. CHASING THE SCREAM-The First And Last Days Of The War On Drugs-Johann Hari

    in Relationships

Welcome to Happiness Index.  Today our conversation is on belief.  Belief is an acceptance that a statement is true or that something exists.  It is trust, faith or confidence in someone or something.  We believe that happiness exists and that happiness is our natural state. The belief that happiness is an inside work is awesome. We believe that happiness is real.  It is the understanding that one possesses the capacity and the ability to take the right action to be happy.  Happiness is a blessing. "Magic is believing in yourself, if you can do that, you can make anything happen," says Johann Wolfgann von Goethe. And, Mahatma Gandhi, said, "If I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it, even if I may not have it at the beginning."  Please join in this conversation today.  Tune in to Happiness Index on www.blogtalkradio.com and cal (347) 539-5818 an share your wisdom on this very interesting topic.

Building Self Confidence & Self Esteem

    in Blogs

Thus Self Confidence is about one’s abilities, while Self Esteem is about one’s sense of worth as a person. Let’s look at what this means through an example…

When you go for a job interview, self confidence is the quality that causes you to believe that the interviewer will find you qualified, and offer you a job. Self esteem is the quality that causes you to believe that you are a valuable person whose life is important — regardless of the opinion of the interviewer and of whether you are offered the job.

    How to Gain Self Confidence

Those who believe they can do something
and those who believe they can’t
    are both right.
    – Henry Ford

Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.
    – Winston Churchill

How Self Confidence and Self Esteem Reinforce Each Other

Trust yourself, then you will know how to live.
    – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
    – Eleanor Roosevelt
