Join us this week as we welcome country music singer songwriter, Jimmy Parker. Originally from Virginia, After serving in the Military and then moving around the east coast for several years playing music, Jimmy moved to Nashville in 1990. In August, 2012, Steven B. Riley and CMG Nashville signed Jimmy to a record contract and have started promoting him worldwide on the internet and on radio. His first major release with CMG was a song called, "Thought I'd Be Home By Now." (ICoMA 2013 Video of the Year Award Winner). Jimmy Parker is the Real Deal when it comes to singing ‘nothing but pure country music.’ His music is a combination of some of the great covers from the past and some great original songs written by him and other writers that have allowed Jimmy to record his songs. With five cds (four of which are available now) to his credit since 2004 and over 50 songs recorded to this time span, what one will find with Jimmy’s music is honest to goodness down-to-earth country music. We will talk to Jimmy about his upcoming schedule, get a behind the scenes look at his music, feature his latest songs, and ask him to share his message for the troops. With the passing of Charlie Haden, many of us are focused on those in the music business whose instrument is the bass. We can all probably name five off the top of our heads who really get our juices flowing - or those with whom we feel an indescribable connection. JUST because of the way they play.
Enter Jimmy Haslip! One of the Masters of the Art of Bass, Jimmy was born in the Bronx. And Spanish was his first language. He learned to speak English later. But the way that he makes his bass speak? There is ONE language - and that's universal :) But let's give you a rewind as to how he got to that level...
Jimmy's family moved to Huntingdon, New York, when he was four. Hearing all kinds of music in the house, he was drawn to the sound of multiple instruments - and he was playing drums, trumpet and tuba early on. But the bass captured his interest. And, at 13, he got one - but here's the kicker: since he was left-handed and since a bass for right-handers was available, Jimmy learned to play it upside down!
1969: Our guest left NY to make his musical path in San Fran, New Orleans, Denver and Dallas. He finally moved to L.A. in 1975 - there he got together with Russell Ferrante and Robben Ford - and they formed the nucleus of players who created "The Inside Story" - Robben's first album.
The strength of that buzz paved the way for the formation of The Yellowjackets in 1980 - Jimmy was a founding member. And it doesn't take a genius to figure out that his way from THERE was gold. In case you might not know - he has had some 21 Grammy nominations - and worked with artists in diverse genres. You can ask Jeff Lorber how he could get along without Jimmy Haslip - the success of "Hacienda" says a LOT!
We'll share music and talk gigs - hang with us on 7/15!
