When it comes to laying out a traditional Thanksgiving spread, Jean Ann Duckworth believes in tough love to get it done. “When planning your menu, decide early on what you can and can’t do. If someone asks, ‘Are you going to serve that special cranberry sauce Aunt Susie always made? It’s always a big favorite,’ ask her to make it herself—and make enough for all 12 of your guests,” says the Life of Simple Joy host. “I had someone at church the other day talking about, ‘Well, this is the way we’ve always prepared this dish.’ So I told her, ‘Oh, good! Can I count on you being here and taking care of that for me?’ People are full of advice right up to the point that you volunteer them to do the work. Then they get quiet real fast.”
