Join me this Sunday, April 13, 2014, at 3:00pm, when I will speak with and play the music of Akua Allrich, vocalist, composer and teacher. She is a Washington, DC native whose musical roots are vast and grounded in jazz and pan-African music. She sings in many languages including Portuguese, French, Spanish, English, Xhosa, and Twi. She was educated at Howard University, where she obtained her BM in jazz vocals and a master’s degree in social work. She was taught, coached and mentored by talented musicians such as world-renowned singer Kehembe V. Eichelberger, singer/drummer Grady Tate, and pianist Charles Covington. While she was in college, one of the first jazz albums she bought was John Coltrane’s Live at the Village Vanguard: The Master Takes.
This Sunday, April 6, 2014 at 3:00pm join me as I speak with Connaitre Miller and play the music of “Afro Blue” an award winning vocal jazz ensemble. Connaitre Miller is an Associate Professor of Music and Coordinator of Jazz Vocal Studies at Howard University, she directs the award winning vocal jazz ensemble “Afro Blue,” teaches vocal jazz improvisation, vocal jazz arranging, and gives individual voice lessons. She has taught in Australia, where she developed a distinguished jazz voice program at the University of Adelaide. In addition, she performs as a solo jazz vocalist at jazz festivals in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee and Pennsylvania.
This Sunday, March 31, 2014, beginning at 3:00pm, I am doing a special hour program celebrating woman jazz musicians. The first half hour I will speak with and play pianist Daille Ketrell’s music. The second half hour I will speak with and play drummer Shirazette Tinnin’s music. Both are incredible musicians. In 1981 in Philadelphia, Scott Marvill assembled a group of musicians eager to play the music they loved, Jazz. This led to their formation of "Freeport." Since 2011, the Washington Women in Jazz Festival has created performance opportunities for women in the jazz community and developed audiences for jazz music.
Today, join me, as I interview a young saxophonist who has listened to the masters of jazz saxophone and developed a respect and sound that is extraordinary. Craig Handy, saxophonist / educator, said that he has a deep sense of tradition, but he hears a kaleidoscope of free flowing ideas. During the second half of the show, I will speak with a young New York drummer, who studied with Grady Tate and listens to many drummers such as the late Max Roach.
