Hybrid Jazz - with Greg Adams and Herman Matthews from East Bay Soul!

    in Music

It's always a SINCERE delight when Greg Adams pays us a visit.  We can recite his background at this point as if it was our OWN :)  Trumpeter, composer, arranger.  Founding member of the beloved Tower of Power.  Grammy and Emmy nominations. Rock, Pop, Soul, Jazz and MORE under his belt for decades - with legendary stars, both living and no longer.  14 albums with TOP, half a dozen solo projects, and three choice works with East Bay Soul.  Which leads us to this new interview!

"That's Life" from EBS took off like a proverbial rocket when it launched in 2015.  To get the most of this groovy mileage, Greg is bringing his band to the Mid-Atlantic/East Coast in a matter of 72 hours.  At Sculler's in Boston on 4/1 - headlining with Pieces of a Dream on 4/3 - and at Bethesda Blues and Jazz on 4/5.  HONEY, this part of the country will NEVER be the same!

With Greg at three p.m. Eastern TODAY, his friend and band mate, Herman Matthews!  World class drummer, born in Texas - where he played with his Uncle's Blues Trio - at age 11!  That prepped this fabulous artist to find his eventual way to Los Angeles.  And stints with Kenny Loggins, Richard Marx, and a HOST of others - including Tower of Power.  There's that strong connection with Greg :)  These two fantastic musicians have had a reputation as being on TOP of their game for a long time.  No brainer when you consider that Greg has been involved in over 600 recordings!  The wide array of genres between Greg and Herman are dazzling.  Well-versed in Jazz, Pop and Soul, especially.  And does that ever translate to the big band feel of "That's Life!"  We'll hear three tracks from it today - the music on this show will be particularly magical!

See you at TWO p.m. Eastern - our guests join us in the next hour.  We can't WAIT!

THE JAZZ BEAT CAFE: featuring: Art Blakey/ The Jazz Messengers

    in Music

The Jazz Messengers is a 1956 album by the Jazz Messengers, released by Columbia Records. It was the last recording by the Jazz Messengers lineup featuring pianist Horace Silver. In 1968 Columbia reissued the LP in their Jazz Odyssey Series with a new cover under the title Art Blakey with the Original Jazz Messengers. In 1997 the album was digitally remastered and released on CD, again with its original title and cover, featuring all the tracks from the original LP along with five additional tracks drawn from the same recording sessions but previously released only on foreign imports. This is the track listing for the current Columbia CD release. Tracks 1-7 are from the original LP and in the same order. The adjacent tracks 8-10 and 12 were first released on Originally (Columbia CL 897, 1956). Track 11 was previously unreleased. "Infra-Rae" (Hank Mobley) - 6:57 "Nica's Dream" (Horace Silver) - 11:51 "It's You or No One" (Sammy Cahn, Jule Styne) - 5:36 "Ecaroh" (Silver) - 6:02 "Carol's Interlude" (Mobley) - 5:36 "The End of a Love Affair" (E.C. Redding) - 6:43 "Hank's Symphony" (Mobley) - 4:37 "Weird-O" (Mobley) - 7:06 "Ill Wind" (Harold Arlen, Ted Koehler) - 2:52 "Late Show" (Mobley) - 7:09 "Deciphering the Message" (Mobley) - 6:29 "Carol's Interlude (alternate take)" (Mobley) - 6:13 PLUS: Angel eyes A Night in Tunisia Art Blakey, drums Horace Silver, piano Hank Mobley, tenor saxophone Donald Byrd, trumpet Doug Watkins, bass .

Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with Sun Soul Orchestra's Ginger Murphy!

    in Music

The incredibly busy Ginger Murphy started her music journey early - studying both piano and cello before she was ten!  A course of study in Cello performance at Northwestern University paved the way for absolutely golden opportunities.  Ginger found herself touring and performing with presitgious ensembles and string quartets, culminating in the All American College Orchestra at Walt Disney World in Orlando.  She was offered a position in the Disney Big Band - and that infused this eager musician with a love for all genres and styles of music.  THAT inspired her to make a move to Los Angeles to pursue life as a studio musician.  Because that became so wise a decision, Ginger gave a lot of thought as to how this positive path happened. And she gives her parents full credit for exposing her to Chicago public schools - which offered orchestral music programs when she was attending.  She has given back so much to other students as a result.  Even maintaining a studio in Los Angeles to mentor young artists on THEIR way :)

Ginger can be heard on so many musical projects that it's hard to list them ALL - we're talking over 200!  Some of those with whom she has shared "space" include household names.  Here's one of those names: she just finished the latest season of "The Voice."  That's why she can do 12/22 on "Hybrid Jazz!"  The places she has seen, the roads she has traveled, the contracts that she has put together for live events (for Peter Gabriel, Josh Groban, and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra!) - it's all staggering.  But almost nothing can compare to the satisfaction that she feels when she works with her multi-talented husband, Stevo Theard.  Stevo and Ginger have created the Sun Soul Orchestra - and you'll hear tracks from this superior work when Ginger visits - on our "Christmas Show."  :)
