As computing technologists, we tend to think of innovations in terms of new products or services supported by, or made of, computing technologies. But there are other types of innovation besides products. There are process innovations, such as McDonald's method of making hamburgers fast; social innovations, such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving; and business model innovations, such as Starbucks replacing a coffee shop with an Internet cafe.In all these categories, we tend to think of innovations as new ways of doing things that positively impact many people.Jerry Michalski, pays heed to "dark innovations"—new ways of doing things that negatively impact many people. He collected a large number of examples of innovations in other areas including social innovation, innovation by the poor, and dark innovation. He thinks most important innovations break taboos, the customs that prevent people from doing things.Innovations are social.Innovations can come from poor, uneducated people.Innovations can produce negative value.Peter,' I have co-authored The Innovator's Way. We defined innovation as "adoption of new practice in a community."

Tuesday's 11PM ET Live
Joining host Kelly Scanlon is Scott Miller, CEO and co-founder of Dragon Innovation, to talk about how the company helps startups turn their product ideas into real products.
Scott has been fascinated by hardware since, as he puts it, he was old enough to hold a screwdriver. He's gone on to work on high efficiency robotic tunafish, life-size robotic dinosaurs for Disney Imagineering and robotic baby dolls for Hasbro.
He was also led the Roomba technical team and led the production of 3 million Roomba units.
Scott recognized that many entrepreneurs often fail going from prototype to high-volume production, so he co-founded Dragon Innovation. The company helps startups and hardware investors, primarily in the area of consumer electronics, progress from prototype to full production. The company also helps their clients navigate logistics, crowdfunding, manufacturing and sales.
