Running a government, whether it is a city, state, or country, is like running a household. You look at what your operating costs are, look at your total household income, and decide how to spend the money you make to pay bills and make sure everyone is fed, clothed, kept warm and safe, and educated. That's what good parents do to take care of the children whose lives are in their hands. The problem with some elected officials is that they are not being good "parents" of the "children" they are supposed to take care of, namely, the voters who are entrusting them with decisions that affect people's lives. Schools in Illinois are being threatened with closure because Governor Bruce Rauner, elected by a small percentage of votes, has held up the release of funds for education, refusing to sign legislation presented by the Illinois General Assembly. Students have united to fight for their right to receive education and are mounting a massive voter registration drive, as well as mass demonstrations and lobbying elected officials to push the Governor to act. If not, what next? Students have already shown how economic boycotts and refusal of sports teams to play can have an impact. Today's guests, student leaders Darren Martin from Chicago State University and Nicolas Martinez from Northeastern Illinois University discuss the power of a new, politically involved, educated generation.
A New Beginning: A Path to Happiness
Welcome to Happiness Index. Today is the 3rd day of a brand new year. Isn’t it wonderful that we can always begin again? It is just a matter of choice. When we remember that we can always choose again. The power of choice makes happiness ours for the choosing. If you want to be happy, then choose to be happy. Prince, the Rock Star said, Every day I feel is a blessing from God. And I consider it a new beginning. Yeah, everything is beautiful. And Mel Gipson, the actor said, It's a wise man who understands that every day is a new beginning, because boy, how many mistakes do you make in a day? I don't know about you, but I make plenty. You can't turn the clock back, so you have to look ahead. Yes, a new beginning is always good and encourages us to choose happiness. This new year what do you choose? Welcome to Happiness Index. We have just celebrated the Winter Solstice, Hanukkah, Christmas and now we are celebrating the 2nd day of Kwanzaa, Kujichagulia. We are 5 days from New Year’s Eve, which is also Kokomon’s birthday and 6 days from New Year’s Day. This is truly a time of celebrations. Are we happy? Maybe we can be happy if we observe the values that the Kwanzaa Celebrations reminds us of. There are seven core values for the seven days of Kwanzaa. Today as we celebrate let us remember "Kujichagulia”, it asks us to define the world in our own image and interest placing indigenous people and culture at the center of our worldview and social reality. There are seven values of Kwanzaa, beginning with yesterday, Umoja which means unity; Kujichagulia, self-determination; Ujimaa, working together; Ujamaa, supporting each other; Nia, purpose; Kuumba, creativity; and Imani, faith. We can extend this holiday season to every day of the year with Kwanzaa. We can celebrate through faith by waking up, walking, eating, knowing that the little things is life is what matters most. It is all in the way we see life. Celebrate, be happy! Thank you for joining us in this very important conversation on celebration as a path to happiness. Call (347) 539-5818 and share your wisdom on this topic.
Celebrate and Be Happy! A path to happiness is a choice to be happy. This is the season of celebrations. Why do we need to create a season to celebrate when life is a celebration? When we refer to a celebration we think of a party, social gathering, people coming together, music, food and decoration. Why do we make it a special gathering? Is life a special gathering? We are continuing the theme of celebration, because we are in the season that we celebrate life, the life of Christ, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and the winter solstice. Why not celebrate every day and every hour? Oprah Winfrey said, The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate. So you see life is to be celebrated, because it increases as you celebrate. And Oscar Wilde says, Life is too important to be taken seriously. So let us celebrate, be happy and have fun. Welcome to Happiness Index. We have just ended the 8 days of Hanukkah and are just 12 days from Christmas, 13 days from Kwanzaa and 19 days from the New Year’s celebration. Are we happy? What do we need to make this this happiest time of our lives or should we embrace the celebrations and acknowledge that they may not be the happiest time, but celebrate we will and celebrate we must. Celebration is the action of marking one's pleasure at an important event or occasion by engaging in enjoyable, typically social, activity. We are a celebration, just because we exist in the magnificent world. Autie Mame said, Live! Life’s a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death. We can extend this holiday season to every day of the year. We can celebrate waking up, walking, eating the little things and life. It is all in the way we see life. Celebrate, be happy! Thank you for joining us in this very important conversation on celebration as a path to happiness. Call (347) 539-5818 and share your wisdom on this topic.

Welcome to Happiness Index. We are in the Holiday Season. Tonight is the first evening of Hanukkah. As we begin to light the candles to bring light into the darkness of the season, let us at the same time develop an attitude of being grateful for everything and everyone in our life. Even the things and the people that challenge us, let us remember that they are there to uplift and make us stronger. Brian Tracy said, Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation. Last week we reminded you that gratitude is a state or quality of being thankful. Remember that gratitude is also setting the intention of thankfulness and that means that we have tapped into our innate attitude of gratitude and happiness. An attitude of gratitude will support us in being happy. Thank you for joining us in this very important conversation on gratitude. Call (347) 539-5818 and share your wisdom on this topic.
