Colorado has experienced unprecedented flooding over the past week. Everyone responds differently during a disaster and many will need help coping with the trauma. My guest is Pat La Plante, a licensed counselor who is also a member of Denver Seminary's Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Team. She will teach us about some of the common reactions to a critical incident, how we can help our friends and family, and signs that someone may need additional support beyond the immediate crisis.
THE WHISTLER - 1942 / 1955
The Whistler was a radio mystery anthology that debuted on CBS Radio on May 16, 1942. The show was heard only on the West Coast and had Signal Oil as the main sponsor. The show centered on a character called "The Whistler," the mysterious narrator of various murder stories.
The role was given to popular radio announcer Bill Forman, although there were occasions where the other personalities like Marvin Miller, Bill Johnstone, Gale Gordon, Everett Clarke, and Joseph Kearns took over. Despite the show being broadcast on the West Coast only, The Whistler was able to become one of the most popular and longest-running crime mystery dramas. It ended on September 22, 1955.

Join me today on "Own Your Life" as I discuss trends in the nature and frequency of critical incidents in the workplace, how to incorporate psychological first aid principles in response to organizations, individuals, and workgroups, how to organize response to incidents in the workplace, school, and with emergency services, exercising cultural competency in the context of response to mass disasters, and how to promote resiliency and self care. This is a snapshot into the world of the trauma therapist and/or the crisis interventionist.
If you have experienced some sort of traumatic incident in your life, whether it be the loss of a loved one, domestic violence, sexual abuse, natural disasters even.l.Emotional and psychological trauma is the result of extraordinarily stressful events that shatter your sense of security, making you feel helpless and vulnerable in a dangerous world.Traumatic experiences often involve a threat to life or safety, but any situation that leaves you feeling overwhelmed and alone can be traumatic, even if it doesn’t involve physical harm. It’s not the objective facts that determine whether an event is traumatic, but your subjective emotional experience of the event. The more frightened and helpless you feel, the more likely you are to be traumatized. There is something called "Traumatic Incident Reduction" that can be helpful.Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR) is a brief, memory-based, therapeutic intervention for children, adolescents, and adults who have experienced crime-related and/or interpersonal violence, war, disasters, torture, childhood abuse, neglect, emotional abuse, traumatic bereavement, or other severe or shocking events. The program is designed to resolve symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and low expectancy of success (i.e., low self-efficacy) by integrating dissociated cognitive and emotional aspects of traumatic memory. Join me and my special guest speaker as we discuss trauma here on The Serenity Show live at 9pm CT at 646-929-0421 and/or www.blogtalkradio.com/ritahodges. Audience participation is encouraged. Live listeners, go to the bottom of the episodes page and click on the live link so you can chat online in my studio with me. Its free!! See you there!
Dave Gahary moderates a debate between Count One, an alias, and Jim Fetzer, who tackle the controversy surrounding the Sandy Hook Elementary School event.
The debate will follow this format:
The moderator will ask questions to each participant where they will have no more than five minutes to present their argument and evidence. If less than the allotted time is used, it will be set aside for a less structured discussion towards the end. At the end of the debate, each participant will have no more than five minutes for their closing statement. Personal or unnecessary attacks will be met with the mute button.
If there are callers, they will be taken during the final hour.
Count One is the alias of a man who has stirred enough controversy over his comments that he feels threatened and refuses to reveal his identity. He will argue that the Sandy Hook Elementary School event was an actual mass-casualty incident.
James H. Fetzer, a former Marine Corps officer, has published widely on the theoretical foundations of scientific knowledge, computer science, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and evolution and mentality.
Jim is a contributor and editor at Veterans Today and hosts a radio show, "The Real Deal", M/W/F
Jim will argue that the Sandy Hook Elementary School event was a staged drill.

Tonight's special guest is Dr Jaime Romo from San Diego is a returning NAASCA family member who has been with us numerous times. As his web site states, "Dr. Jaime Romo is an educator, consultant, and author. He promotes healing from abuse and the prevention of child sexual abuse, particularly abuse by religious authorities or in the context of religious settings." He offers numerous services, including seminars and consulting, and writes workbooks and a newsletter. Of special note is his, "Healing the Sexually Abused Heart: A Workbook for Survivors, Thrivers and Supporters." Jaime specifically wants to talk tonight about trauma, how it works, how it's generally treated / mis-treated, and some solutions. He recently wrote about Traumatic Incident Reduction, an efficient means of addressing post-traumatic stress disorder from a variety of life events, including rape, physical and mental abuse, combat, and child abuse. "Even though we may not consciously remember the details of a buried memory," he says, "it still acts on us and has the power to make us feel it again, as if the trauma is still happening. This is why memory has such an ever-present impact on us. And why it is so important to address those memories and feelings in a structured and safe environment." The majority of clients receiving TIR sessions experience significant improvement within just 25-35 hours of treatment. Jaime is a certified TIR facilitator, and he'll tell us about the Traumatic Incident Reduction sessions he's facilitating in Carlsbad, CA.
