Join Amy Zellmer as she chats with with Kristen Schreier, MA, CCC-SLP about caregiver support.
“It is hard to be a patient with a brain injury, but it is harder to be a caregiver, “says Kristen Schreier, MA, CCC-SLP, speech pathologist at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Toms River.“You cannot expect yourself to be able to take care of someone if you are not well yourself, or at the top of your game.”
Kristen has been a speech pathologist with HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Toms River, New Jersey since 2007. Kristen received her master’s degree from The College of New Jersey. She is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist and is the hospital’s program champion for the brain injury program. In January 2016, Kristen became a facilitator to train other healthcare professionals to obtain brain injury specialist certifications. She also works with Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey as an adjunct professor and clinic supervisor. Kristen is dedicated to educating patients, families, and other clinicians about brain injury diagnoses, recovery, and the necessity of therapy.
The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Kristen Dreaper. She will discuss droppingkeys.net.
Dropping Keys is a community built on the belief that we all have not just the capacity, but the responsibility to help others on their journey. Sharing our own stories represents a milestone in our road to recovery, wholeness, or on our spiritual journey. It signifies that we have made progress and hold wisdom that can help others. We share to inspire others and to reassure ourselves that we have, in fact, experienced personal growth.
Whether you have struggled with mental illness, substance abuse, fostering, or adopting, your experiences and wisdom can serve others.

Do You Communicate With The Animals You Know? We once adopted Alice, a beautiful Maine Coon cat who had grown up in one place, but got booted out at the age of 12, because one of the children in the home became deathly allergic. After sequestering Alice for three weeks, we gradually allowed her access to the out of doors. She promptly ran away. I called her previous owner to come help me hunt for her. As we were searching our neighborhood, I asked her: “Did you explain to Alice why she was leaving your house and coming to live with us?” She looked at me blankly for a moment, then replied: “I DO talk to my animals, but not usually in paragraphs!” MJ Domet shares more about “listening” when we discuss “Voiceless Whispers” this Thursday. And BTW, Alice came back to us, living happily for another 8 years. Before she settled down, however, her previous human spoke to her in paragraphs and told her why the change was being made!
“The purity of a person’s heart can be quickly measured by how they regard animals”, MJ Domet challenges us all to examine our connection with animals and nature. Animals, she says, are companions, messengers, teachers and connectors. Sharing stories of animal encounters, MJ Domet empowers you to hear your own Voiceless Whispers. Our guest this morning is the Honorable Mayor Steve Aspel of Redondo Beach.
Steve was born in Inglewood and grew up in Westchester. In 1976, he moved to Redondo Beach and has been living there ever since. Steve lived in North Redondo for 16 years, 6 in District 3 and 10 years in District 5 before settling in District 1. After living in different parts of the city he realize that each area is unique and special, but every neighborhood is still Redondo and collectively makes the city the beautiful place it is. In 1990, he married Pam, his best friend from high school. Pam had 2 kids, Kristen and Pat, from a previous relationship and soon after they were married they had two additional children, Catie and Brett. All 4 of their children attended Redondo Beach Schools, played AYSO, Little League and Softball. Pam and Steve have been very involved in the community as AYSO volunteers, board members, coaches and referees for over 20 years. Steve served as a Planning Commissioner from 2001 to 2005. He served as the District 1 Council Member from 2005 through 2013 when he ran for Mayor and won the election in 2014.
This morning, we’re going to hear some of what the Mayor will focus on during the State of the City Address, which will take place on Tuesday, February 16 at the Crowne Plaza Redondo Beach & Marina Hotel at 7 a.m.

An Interview with Dr. Kristen Buras
By now, you are aware of the New Orleans education story that occurred after the Katrina Hurricane. What you probably don't know, are the facts as recorded by researchers on the impact of charter schools on a community of color. Dr. Kristen Buras h as written several books and articles on corporate education reform, a term that many researchers take offense to and have named it slave market reform.
NCEBC wants to welcome the full village to question, understand, and ask questions, about governance, educational policy, finances, resources and the basic democratic principles of equity, fairness and justice. It is important (if not vital) that we have conversations to continue to dispel the myth that black children are incapable of achieving high test scores, therefore public schools are incapable of providing quality education.
"We believe in accountability. We believe that data drives decision-making. We believe in research-based practices. These principles have been used for generations by high performing schools, principals and Superintendents; especially those working and succeeding in urban communities were poverty and race are the dominant elements. This conversation is about the politics, power, economics and restructuring of a public school system into a charter school system".
Diana Daniels, Executive Director, National Council on Educating Black Children
Join hosts Dr. Nicole Walters and Mr. Michael "Chappie" Grice, both NCEBC Board of Director Members, on NCEBCTalkRadio on Monday November 2, at 10AM (EST)

Have you ever taken a small child out of doors, where birds are chirping, squirrels chattering, and wind was rustling leaves in the trees? You’ll know, then, the exhilarating power of listening. Leslie Shore--education professor, instructional designer, management consultant and inspirational speaker—helps people develop all kinds of listening abilities, including intra-personal and inter-personal skills. Few skills are as important as our ability to communicate. The largest part of “communicating” is being able to really listen! Come listen about listening!
The Exhilarating Power of Listening! When I started out working as a psychotherapist, some of the people I saw presented situations that were so difficult I was concerned I might be of little help to them. As I wrestled with this issue, I realized that few people have someone who will really listen to them—that if I did nothing more than listen, that was enough. It turned out to be a fantastic course of action! I build a nearly 45 year career on listening! I’m excited to learn more secrets about listening from Leslie Shore when she appears this week.
