Does Idle No More have the impetus to keep on going through 2013?
Our guests are:
Sylvia McAdam a co-founder of a global movement called Idle No More. She lives on her peoples lands in the Treaty 6 territory and teaches university classes in nearby Prince Albert. She is from the Nehiyaw nation and the Whitefish Lake Reserved Lands #118. Sylvia is a fluent nehiyaw speaker and understands her people’s culture. She is a direct descendant of Treaty makers, and hereditary okimaws. She has earned her Jurist Doctorate from the University of Saskatchewan and a Bachelor of Human Justice from the University of Regina. She is author of a book called "Cultural Teachings: First Nations Protocols & Methodologies".
Sootahkii Calling Last works with a Phoenix-based group called Valley Natives. This group was formed in response to Idle no More movement to foster a sense of community within the urban native community. It has organized a number of teach-ins on water relations, the environment, climate, and de-colonization. She is also a founding member of non-profit with a fellow Masters student and good friend Laura Medina working on community and tribal government relations, as well as educational presenting. She grew up on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana and a member of the Blackfoot Confederacy, also an enrolled in the Blood tribe of Alberta Canada. She currently working on her Masters in Management at the University of Phoenix to complement a bachelor’s from the University of Montana in Environmental Science with an emphasis in Water Resources. Most of her experience is rooted in Water Quality, specifically heavy metal contamination clean up.
Idle No More is a protest movement which began in December 2012, originating among the Abooriginal Peoples of Canada comprising the First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples and their non-Aboriginal supporters in Canada. We take give a history of the movement in the bay area, and speak with Nina Wilson, one of the 4 founders of the movement in Canada.
