Credibility is the key to a successful small business. It impacts vendor relationships as well as client relationships. Credibility is similar to a credit score if you think about it. When you have it, everyone wants to work with you. When you don't have it, you lose opportunities frequently without even realizing it. In the real world, credibility is typically spread with word-of-mouth conversation. It is also handled with services such as the Better Business Bureau. No one wants to have complaints or other negative feedback. In the online world, people use social media, complaint sites, review sites, etc. The number of ways for people report their feedback are more plentiful, but even more importantly, those remarks are enduring. Some comments or reviews maybe live for years online. That is both good and bad, depending on the types of remarks that are out there. Managing the balance of good remarks and bad remarks is the critical element. Let's just assume someone will say something bad about you online someday. Justified, unjustified, true, or false. Doesn't matter. A negative remark gets posted online somewhere. It will likely last for years. What's the true impact of that remark? If well written and believable, it can be devastating. To begin with, when I was younger, I had the boundless optimization that is bred by the naivety of youth. I hadn't been through much hardship in my life, and so didn't think anything bad could really happen to me, including the possibility of my business failing. Therefore I went boldly forward with few resources or contingencies in place. You'd think older entrepreneurs with their greater net worth would be more financially courageous, but the opposite is often true. If you're 50, and your business bombs and draws down your retirement nest egg, you may not have time or earning power to make it back. Therefore, many 50+ entrepreneurs are afraid to take big financial risks. As an old dog entrepreneur, you have to learn new tricks, and it may take a lot of practice to break old habits. For instance, my children laugh that when I need a business phone number, I look in the Yellow Pages and not Google. When my youngest son saw that AARP sent me a free transistor radio as a premium, he laughed again: "No one listens to the radio on a radio," he said. Then it's a matter of finding a vocation that allows you to live, as closely as you can, your ideal day - every day of the year. To find that vocation, make a list of your interests, passions, aptitudes, and favorite activities. Are any of these things other people would pay you to do or make? Those are the realistic options, unless you are independently wealthy.

This is a topic that's been coming up lately - getting back to basics when it comes to marketing. It's so easy to set aside what works and start chasing BSO's (Bright Shiny Objects).
I was working with someone earlier this week on their marketing strategy and talking about their 'call to action' (your call to action is your standard offer that you drive everyone to, a free analysis or consultation perhaps)and what they could use for their call to action.
In discussing what has worked in the past it turns out they already had something in place but it had fallen off the radar.
This really is a common problem, I do it too if I'm not careful! Fortunately, there's also a common solution and that is to have a strategy in place and to follow that strategy.
