World Footprints will take you on an exploration of the wonderful city of Norfolk, VA. On today's show we will travel through rich historical neighborhoods like Ghent, meet fascinating residents like the Doumars Family—creators of the ice cream cone, and visit cultural attractions like the Chrysler Museum and Attucks Theatre. From the Waterfront to the Freemason District, the Botanical Gardens, Nauticus and beyond, Norfolk offers a treasure trove of art, culture, history and culinary delights.
My mom, Hattie Neal, is 92 now. She and I discussed events from her youth in the 1920's and 30's all the way up to the civil rights movement in the 1960s. We talked about what it was like to grow up in the rural South with her brothers, who went to CC Camp and later migrated North to Detroit. We discussed Tent City in Fayette County, Tennessee, which was a settlement former Black sharecroppers who were evicted by angry white landowners when they registered to vote. At the end of this tape, my mother shares interesting news about a KKK march through our neighborhood that you probably never heard about or imagined.
It was delightful to spend time this evening conversing with Mama instead of making reports about recent brutality and deaths under the color of law that I normally discuss. Alexyss K. Tylor did not broadcast at Human Rights Demand tonight as scheduled, but Mama and I had a grand time. You are invited to play the tape and join us.
Power concedes nothing without a demand; it never has, and it never will. ~F. Douglass

Our guest this morning is Michael Bell.
Michael, a South Bay local, is the founder and co-owner of Bell Event Services. He grew up in the area, watching it prosper and wanting to be a part of the community. He began working as a bass player at a young age with local bands. After getting married and having children, he began working as the Event Coordinator for a large production company for a number of years.
About 10 years ago, Michael made the bold move to start Bell Event Services, utilizing the contacts he'd made over the years. It was a struggle in the beginning and started out of his garage, but has since blossomed into one of the largest event companies in California.
Michael prides himself on his amazing team building, strategy and logistical skills and provides his customers with the very best. His unwavering desire to see things through has resulted in the management of many annual events and the regular business of many clients, such as Fiesta Hermosa and Edelbrock's Rev'ved Up 4 Kids Car Show, along with entertainers such as Jim Belushi and Frank Sinatra Jr.
So, this morning, we’re going to get the inside scoop on the upcoming Fiesta Hermosa, taking place Labor Day Weekend, September 5 through September 7.
