    in Sports

Radio show committed to talking about Semi Pro Football, the Heartland Football League, and the teams that are members. On Monday March 7th the HFL Radio Show will be talking to Ricky Witt, General Manager of the Kentucky Warriors. The Warriors just finished their first year of existence, and earned a record of 3-7 as part of the HFL South Red Division that put two teams in the HFL Playoffs. The Warriors play in the historic Spartans Memorial Stadium in Portsmouth, Ohio. Spartans Stadium was deemed an Ohio Historical Site on October 5th, 2003. From 1930-1934 the Portsmouth Spartans of the NFL called Spartans Stadium Home. Portsmouth is the 2nd smallest city to ever have a NFL team. While they called Portsmouth home their record on the banks of the Ohio river was 19-2-4. No other team in the NFL at that time had a better record at home. Special things have happened at Spartans Stadium. The Spartans came in 2nd place in the NFL in 1931 and 1932. Legendary Players such as Red Grange, Bronco Nagurski, Gene Alford, Earl (Dutch) Clark, and Glenn Presnell played in that stadium. Presnell, a Portsmouth Spartan was the NFL Scoring leader in 1933. He also kicked a 54 yd field goal, which was an NFL record till 1995. In 1934, feeling the effects of the great depression, the Portsmouth Spartans franchise found itself in financial troubles and was sold to a Detroit businessman, George Richards, owner of Detriot radio station WJR. He moved the team to Detroit and renamed the team the Detroit Lions, to coincide with the baseball team Detroit Tigers. In 1935 the Detroit Lions won the NFL championship, just two years after the franchise left Portsmouth. Now the Kentucky Warriors are trying to add to the vaunted football history of Spartans Memorial Stadium. A HFL Championship would do the trick. Listen in as we talk to Ricky Witt, about his plan to take the Kentucky Warriors into the playoffs this year.
