Join Author Teresa R. Kemp for a discussion of her new book "Keeper Of The Fire". This book discusses her Gullah Geechie culture and includes 480 pages of heritage research done by five generations of her family documenting their journeys across Africa to enslavement in America - representing more than 187 years of history in America. They passed down documents, a culture of faith, and a tradition of service to the community.
Mrs. Teresa R. Kemp is the 5th Generation Quilter, historian and owner of Plantation Quilts and UGRR Secret Quilt Code Museum. Born in Baumholder, West Germany to the late Dr. Howard and Serena (Strother) Wilson. She graduated from Berlin American High School and attended Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. She transferred to West Virginia State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She also graduated from DeVry University in Atlanta, Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems.
In 2005, with her parents she opened the UGRR Secret Quilt Code Museum. A staunch advocate for conservation, healthier lifestyles for all and, as an Abolitionist, she fights Human Trafficking while researching international slavery & preserving the world’s cultural heritage.
Smooth R&B performer Jerome Woods, born in Benton Harbor, Michigan,
is better known by his stage name Rome. He sang along with his mother’s soul
records (Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke) as well as in the local church choir. He
joined an R&B cover band named Fire & Ice while still in high school and quickly
began traveling the region performing in local clubs and talent contests as a solo
act and with the band.
Rome left Oakwood University in 1989 to pursue his dream of becoming
an R&B singer on the West Coast. He quickly began touring as a back-up
vocalist with R&B singer/songwriters Patti LaBelle and Vesta known for hits
"Once Bitten, Twice Shy", "Sweet Sweet Love", "Special," and her 1989 hit and
signature song, "Congratulations,” in addition to performing in industry
Finally, in 1996 Rome was connected with record producers Gerald
Balilergeau and Victor Meritt who sent his demo tape to RCA Records. The label
signed him immediately and he began working on his debut album, self-titled
ROME, which was released in April 1997. The album soon ascended to #30 on
the Album charts, mainly on the strength of the single, "I Belong to You
(Everytime I See Your Face)," which peaked at #6 in the United States. Rome
had two Top 40 hits from the album, and it was certified platinum.
In 2001 he returned with two albums: To The Highest and To Infinity
(Thank You); the last one is just an alternative edition of Rome2000: Thank
You. Do It followed in 2003, and three years later Sony issued The Best of
Rome has just released his new single, “Close to You” on iTunes!
