Part 14: Close-Up Talk Radio welcomes back Maureen Santora

    in Education

Long Island City, NY – Christopher Santora had only been a firefighter with Engine 54, Ladder 4 for two months when he died tragically on September 11th.

“It devastated us, but my husband and I both understood we couldn’t change what happened,” recalls his mother Maureen Santora. “We wanted to do something that would benefit the future generations and help them remember 9/11.”

In his memory, Maureen and Al Santora established the Christopher Santora Educational Scholarship Fund, which awards $50,000 in scholarships each year to New York City’s elementary, middle school and high school students. Scholarships awarded based on an essay competition. The essays are evaluated based on the student’s response to the topic, grammar and spelling, originality and their ability to relate the topic to their personal experience.

“It’s always a topic that’s related to current events because Christopher loved history,” says Maureen. “It’s something we hope the kids give some thought to. We’re looking for essays that reveal the integrity of the student’s character.”

    GREATEST EDUCATION REQUIRES RELIGION

    in Politics Conservative

THE GREATEST EDUCATION YOU CAN GET IS A REAL RELIGIOUS ONE

I was blessed to have the benefit of a Real Catholic education, My kindergarten school was PS189. where I learned to spill paint on my coloring book. From there on it was St. Elizabeth's grammar school all nuns and one lay teacher. From there is was on to Bishop Du Bois High School. All priests and Marist brothers and one lay gym teacher. Totally religious exposure. Did I absorb religion like a blotter? What teenager does while hormones bubble?  The gift I received was knowledge of right from wrong. You can call abortion choice but I know it is murder. God says through Moses thou shalt not kill period. Especially your own. Jesus says the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

So therefore knowing right from wrong does not qualify me to throw stones. However I do have an obligation to convince people in trouble from hurting their soul. The schools I was blessed to attend are no more. Convents and churches are up for sale. The same one dollar in the 50's collection basket is in the basket still. My grammar school education was free to parish members. My high school education was $12.00 a month. I had an after school job that paid $12.00 a week. Today big families three or more kids cannot afford a religious education for their children. Off they go to anti religious, anti American secular schools where teachers unions serve themselves first. Just like the fat golden calf government.
