Since forming only a few short years ago in 2010, Los Angeles based Alternative Metal Band Gemini Syndrome has already made a major name for themselves in the music scene. The band is fronted by former OTEP band member, Aaron Nordstrom, who was given the name 'white wizard' as it symbolizes his white hair and goatee. The line-up of the band consists of Guitarists-Mike Salerno and Rich Juzwick, Bassist Alessandro Paveri and Drummer Brian Salerno Media. A unique and captivating sound comes from their heavy alternative metal style that is intertwined with industrial and country elements. The band has signed with Warner Bros. Records and released their their album, LUX, which is in stores now! For more information and upcoming tour dates, visit www.geminisyndrome.com.
Convicted of murder, but exonerated years later, Rubin “Hurricane” Carter has returned to His Lord, at the age of 76.
Maintaining his innocence since the triple-murder charges in 1966, in Patterson, N.J., he became for many, a symbol of the insipid racism and rush-to-incarcerate black men, which many argue, exists today.
I recall vividly, his bald, shiny head and goatee mustache. He looked then, that he could go a few rounds for the middleweight championship.
On Monday, SCOTUS ruled in favor of a Michigan voter initiative, banning the use of race, as a factor in admission into college. In a remote sense, this conjures the discussion we had on Critical Discourse, regarding the efficacy of admissions exams for NYC “elite” high schools.
The reaction was swift, but most strikingly, one of the justices, Sonia Sotomayor, in dissent, harshly criticized the decision, going as far as accusing the majority in the 6-2 ruling, of being “out of touch…”. In my view, such a public tantrum is unprofessional and in bad taste.
But, to be frank, couldn’t one argue that a college should have the right, as opposed to the obligation, to consider race?
What will this mean for black and Latino students, who purportedly will be “locked out” of opportunities for [material] advancement?
THIS DECISION DOES NOT GRANT A COLLEGE THE RIGHT TO USE RACE AS A REASON TO DENY ADMISSION!
Incidentally, Cliven Bundy made some controversial comments, with regards to race, which are worth discussing
AS ALWAYS – I can’t wait for the discussion, which is always better when you come on board and share your insights, views and expertise
Angel Nieves is like Andy Sipowicz or Lennie Briscoe. A retired New York Police Department (NYPD) detective who gave 20 years to the job, he is now a Pet Security Consultant .As a police officer he arrested murderers and drug dealers; now he tracks down a different type of bad guy — with the same meticulous care. He’s always either on the phone or on the computer, adding details to the cases... he keeps in a huge file at his home office. However, some of the cases he works on have to be turned over to law enforcement, so Angel gathers as much information as he can and turns it over to his friends in blue.“I used to save people from animals. Now I save animals from people.”Once bitten in the face by a pit bull that needed to be gotten under control at a street fair, Angel only blamed the owner, who should have understood his dog better. The dog should not have been in such a busy place, which made it necessary for Angel to take the dog from the owner to get it under control. He grew a goatee for a while to cover the bite mark on his chin. Today, the scar is a reminder, not of bad animals, but of how easily animals can get into bad situations — and that’s what he is working to prevent.Angel grew up in the notoriously rough Harlem neighborhood of New York City — a Puerto Rican kid in the primarily black projects — where he earned his first degrees in street smarts and self-defense. He spent a lot of time at his grandmother’s house nearby, where she had chickens, roosters, rabbits, dogs and cats. He sometimes stole animals from slaughterhouses and took them to her. He also used to keep pigeons in a coop on the roof of an abandoned building. He spent summers at his family’s farm in Puerto Rico, and though it was quite a change from the city streets, he continued to nurture his dedication to animals there.
